Goodbye Eva...

On Wednesday night around 8:40p.m., we had to say goodbye to our loved companion, Eva. Mark and I had to make the decision that no one wants to make, we had to release Eva from the pain and suffering that she was feeling. After only a few short weeks of dealing with a Mast Cell Tumor, her body couldn't take it any more. She started to get disoriented and she was ready to leave. On many occasions when either Mark or I took her outside, she would wonder to a corner of the yard and lay down looking up at the sky. As Mark put it Wednesday night, she was asking and ready to go home. So with heavy hearts Mark, Mikayla, and myself (along with two of the most caring vets) helped her gracefully take that final walk home. She passed peacefully and fast. She laid her head in Mark's lap as she did, letting him know that everything was alright. When we got home, we looked up at the stars brightly shinning in the night's sky and said goodbye to one very special part of our lives. Take a moment and make a memory of the things you care about - we have.

Here is a tribute to one very special Dive - Miss Eva. The movies of her playing in the snow were taken just two months ago (if that). Shows you why you need to make the memories each and every day. If you were lucky enough to know her, you know how special she was. If you didn't know her, I am so sorry that you missed out on one of the most special things that graced my life. She will forever be missed.

Cough Medicine...

When doing research for Mikayla's cold, I came across this information on cold medicine and kids. An FDA advisory committee has determined that there is no data that states using cough and cold medicine for kids (and adults) does nothing to help. It may also be harmful.
What's the concern about cough and cold medicines for kids? Over-the-counter cough and cold medicines won't cure a common cold or make it go away any sooner. In fact, cough and cold medicines haven't been proved effective for children. And there are serious risks to consider. For example, the sedating effects of antihistamines can be dangerous for kids already having trouble breathing. For young children, an accidental overdose of cough or cold medicine could be fatal. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) encourages parents to avoid cough and cold medicines for children younger than age 2.
After watching the video below, I have to wonder how these companies can get away with promoting this shit to parents with the knowledge that their products DON'T work. They have data that PROVES that these medicines DO NOT reduce cough or congestion in children that have colds. But these companies can still sell this stuff stating that it does work. WHY?

Below is a video from The Children's Hospital in Boston.

Sick and Tired...

After finding out that Eva had cancer last week, Mikayla started to get a cold. She seemed to have some sniffles on Saturday March 15, but nothing we were too worried about. Then Sunday came and we could tell that the cold took hold. This is her second cold and was different than her first one. Last time she was stuffed up with little nasal drainage. This time she was (is) like a faucet. We had to stop giving her solid foods because she would start to cough and then throw up everything she ate. I noticed on that Monday (when she was crying) that the back of her throat was red, so eating solids just irritated it.

So last week we took her to the doctor and found out that she had ear infections in both ears. We have started her on antibiotics to help with the infections, but now we have non-smelling poop. Why is this important? I have not been able to tell if she has gone to the bathroom like I used to.

So with Eva being sick and needing to go out a lot more than usual and Mikayla sick and needing more attention Mark and I are more tired than usual. I know that I am going to jinx us by saying this, but we have not gotten what Mikayla has/had so that has helped a great deal. What is happening now is both of us are doing school, taking care of Eva and Mikayla, trying to give as much attention to the other pups as well. So we are much more tired than ever.

The picture above is of Miss Mikayla during the worst part of this cold.

Breaking The Law...

John McCain's campaign spending is breaking the law. He elected for public funding when his campaign was having trouble. But now that he is the presumptive nominee, he is, by his campaign's own admission, around $4 million over his legal spending limit.

Why is this important? According to the FEC's law, McCain has broken the law and can be jailed for up to 5 years if convicted.

The DNC filed a complaint today with the FEC you can read here. But essentially, McCain signed a candidate agreement in August of 2007, seeking a certificate of eligibility for matching funds with the FEC. On December 20, the Commission announced it had certified McCain to receive federal matching funds. But checks for matching funds generally don't get written until February or March, and the cash strapped McCain campaign needed money before that.

So on January 31 2008, the McCain campaign disclosed that it had obtained a $4 million line

Eva...

Where to begin? Things with Eva are not going well. We had decided to do the prednisone treatment for the tumor. This would not make the cancer go away, it would help reduce the tumor site and maybe give Eva some relief. We started her on it on Friday night, but since then everything seemed to go down hill. She has not been eating. She is anemic and dehydrated. Our main gaol is for Eva to have a respectable quality of life in her last days. We know (no matter how hard it is) that she will not live forever and we don't want to have her live in pain.

Starting on Saturday, she had diarrhea which has not gone away. Furthermore, yesterday while I was babysitting, she needed to go out but Mark couldn't get to her in time and she had an accident on the floor of the kitchen. The problem being the accident had blood in it now. To this day she is still not eating anything that she can keep down except for some EVO dog food that I gave her this morning. Looking at her and petting her, you can tell she has lost some weight. You can feel every bone and her face looks very skinny.

Also this morning Mark noticed that when he took her out there was blood on the snow. She usually eats some snow when she goes out, but Mark couldn't find the source until they came back inside. She was now bleeding from the nose. Not a lot, but enough to scare us. The "talk" came around this morning as well. We know that the day will come that we have to make the decision to euthanize her, but was that day today?

We called the vet and talked with them to see what needed to be done next. We then took her in to get some fluids in her (along with some electrolytes, vitamin B, injectable Pepcid, and Benadryl). Hoping this would help her get her energy back as well as her hunger. When we weighed her at the vet, she was 70.5 lbs (she lost almost 12% of her body weight - not good). We were at the vets for more than 2 hours and during this time she had a small seizure. Scared the living shit out of me. She recovered from that and took the rest of the fluids like a champ. She started to relax and fall asleep.

We are home right now and she is sleeping in her favorite spot - the futon. She isn't eating and doesn't want any food. I am hoping that it's part of the morning adventure and she is just tired. Hopefully she will eat later today. Keep your fingers crossed.

The picture above is from a week ago after we had her incision looked at and re-wrapped.

800 Dogs Seized...

On March 12, a huge story broke in Tucson, Az. Around 800 small dogs were seized from a triple-wide mobile home of Wanda and Bill Jones. As with many hoarding cases, the dogs were kept in filthy living conditions. Some dogs were pregnant and giving birth as they were being transported to the shelter.
Jenny Rose, a spokeswoman for the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, said 96 dogs were removed from the house on Monday and about another 700 were taken out Wednesday. "This is twice the numbers that we've ever seen before, twice as big as our previous record-breaker," Rose said. "The home was definitely in very bad condition, urine and feces all over the home, in the kitchen and bedroom, with a very strong odor," she said. "Obviously, 800 dogs in a triple-wide mobile home, they were packed in there. That being said, they were in pretty good shape."

Along with the dogs, investigators also found 82 caged parrots. How do we let things get to this stage? Animal shelters and humane societies run on very little money as well as very little staff. There is a lot of bad in the world when it comes to animals and most shelters are trying to do it all themselves.

On the upside, there has been a huge turnout from the community to adopt these dogs.

In the days since local law enforcement and Humane Society of Southern Arizona officials rounded up 752 dogs from an Avra Valley breeder, scores of people have inundated the shelter seeking to adopt the animals. As of Monday, March 17, 460 dogs and cats taken from the property on the 12200 block of West Manville Road had found new homes, according to Humane Society spokeswoman Jenny Rose.
The couple started to raise these dogs and sell them to interested people. But as time progressed, they started to sell fewer and fewer until they became hoarders. So what is a hoarder, you ask?

An April 1, 2000, article in the Psychiatric Times refers to a study of animal hoarders, offering this definition: “… someone who accumulates a large number of animals; fails to provide minimal standards of nutrition, sanitation and veterinary care; and fails to act on the deteriorating condition of the animals …” An estimated 700 to 2,000 new cases of animal hoarding occur every year in the United States, according to the article.
Hoarders believe that they are the only people that can take care of the animals. They feel some unhealthy attachment to the animals and as a few become more and more, the owners become unable to properly care for them. The house fills with urine and feces as the owners fall deeper and deeper into the inability to care for the animals. There is a strong denial of the inability to provide this minimum care and this impacts the animals, the household, and human occupants of the dwelling.

Below is a picture of the "people of interest".

Hulu...

OK, the name sucks but it the name actually is rooted in a Mandarin proverb that refers to the ''hulu'' as the ''holder of precious things.'' And if you are a TV nut like I am, it is a very precious thing. Mark has mentioned that this was going to happen. Every bit of entertainment, he said, will one day be on the Internet. This is the start. Click on the Hulu image to go to their website.

Originally conceived as a joint venture between NBC Universal and News Corp, this is what every TV nut is waiting for. Hulu is a place that you can go to watch old and new TV shows. Some good and some that I have never heard of (of wish I had forgotten). Not only TV, but you can watch movies FREE. Well sort of. I will get to that part later.

So this little venture started out as Fancast (which is still out there but not as good) and then progressed into what Hulu is planning to become. When you want to watch a TV show you have a choice to ways to search. By title, most popular, recently added, popular clips, alphabetically, genre, or network. With movies you can search by popular movies, popular movie clips, alphabetically, genre, and studio. When this site is fully functioning it will be something else.

Why do I say when? Because, as I stated, this is a collaboration NBC and News Corp (Fox). This means that the majority of the TV shows that are on the site are from NBC and FOX. The other problem is that they don't have all the episodes for recent shows (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, House, Chuck, Bionic Women, etc.). They also don't have any episodes of some recent shows (SCRUBS, Heroes, etc.). So if I wanted to go back and catch up on a show I missed, they may not have all the episodes or may not have all the seasons. They are still adding new shows daily, but when are they going to be adding new (or all) the seasons. For an example: I Dream of Jeannie has episodes 25, 26, 27, 29, 30 from season two and missing episodes 2, 6, 14, 15, 23-27, 29-32 of season three. I hope they add them all on.

Although they have movies as well, they are not truly "free". You will have to watch some commercials throughout the movie. The positive thing I can say about this is that they actually do a great job of breaking up the movie for the commercial. Not like watching a movie on TV and they break right in the middle of a scene. They are also trying to get major advertisers to be the "main" ad that you see. This has happened to me three times. When you pick a movie or TV show, there may be a choice to watch one ad that may be two-three minutes long and then watch the show uninterrupted or pick to see short ads throughout the show. This choice was given in both TV and movies. I would rather watch a long ad at the beginning than have my entertainment chopped up.

The quality of the shows and movies are real good. Not HD quality, but good. Hulu also gives you the option to embed a show or a clip from the show. I have not done it yet, but from what I see you can crop part of a show or movie and embed it. You choose. I like that.

Hulu is in talks with other networks to bring more to the table, but in an Entertainment Weekly article, CBS is the only one that responded to request for an interview and they sounded optimistic about adding to the Hulu world.

Some of the good shows that Hulu has:
I Dream of Jeannie
Bewitched
Hart to Hart
The Bob Newhart Show
Mary Tyler Moore
McHale's Navy
And many more! I could just sit and watch all these old shows all day long.

Below is a promo from Hulu.

Taylor's Hello...

Well, hello thar! 8B

'Tis the niece of the blogger. Yeah, he asked me to be a part of the blog and to write about my life with diabetes and, well, random stuff in my life. Like the fact that I should be working on my art project (which is taking way too long for an impatient person like me XD) I might also put up some of my art that I actually like. I'm still kinda surprised that I was able to get off my lazy butt and write this as soon as I did. *laughs*

Well, then... on to business. *puts on cool MIB shades*
My day today's been quite interesting. It went just fine until me and my best friend stayed after school to work on stuffs and we missed the first shuttle bus (since the bus driver just had to be early and not wait for anyone DX ) to one out of three of the elementary schools. So, since she didn't have a ride, we decided to walk to the school to try and beat the buses, which, of course with our luck, happened to be leaving just as we got there. What are the odds of that? I mean, seriously?

Yeah... Well, I saw Horton Hears A Who on Saturday. It was AWESOME!!! \m/ Especially that little yellow hedgehog creature, Katie. "In my world, they're all ponies. And they eat rainbows and poop butterflies!" XD Classic.

For SSA choir, we went to a choral festival (which was so much fun, by the way) and me and Jazz kept telling people that we were half sisters. People actually believed us. XD THEN, she said I was an accident and the spawn of the milkman! D: That made me sad...

Wow... this entry is reeeeaaaallllyyyy long. |D Well, I like it 'cuz... well... I rock like that, m'kay?

Signing out,
Taylor

Taylor...

One of the things I wanted to bring to this Blog is a perspective from others. An insight that I can only empathize with, not really understand because it is not happening to me. For this, I have asked my niece to write some post about her life and her issues. This, I think, will be good for me because I will one day need o understand how my little girl is thinking, feeling, and most importantly how to talk with her.

Taylor is an amazing young women. She is very creative and shows it in a variety of forms. She plays the guitar, sings, draws amazing anime, and much more. Although she was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes when she was 4 years old, this disease was never the definition of Taylor. She didn't let it stop her or her ideas. So when I asked her to write here, it was in part to get an insight on a young persons acceptance of this, but not just that. I think she has a lot to say - I hope. I think she can help me (as a father of a daughter) get an idea of what hell my little girl will put me through.

With that said I will say no more. I will let Taylor do the talking.

So...

What's it like when your appointed officials don't care what the majority thinks or feels? How can someone who works for the American people think so little of them? Since 9/11, the Bush administration has pushed the "patriotic" term down the throats of many Americans who don't agree with them or just think "something" is wrong with this administration. I, for one, feel that Bush and his cronies are possibly the worst thing that has happened to America.

Now when Cheney was confronted on ABC's Good Morning America about the 2/3's of Americans who don't think that the war in Iraq is worth fighting, what do you suppose his response was? Not, "well we are taking the concerns of the country's people into account" or "that so many feel this way concerns me". No! His response was "SO!". SO. Are you fucking kidding me? And then when asked "so you don't care what the people think", he didn't try to correct himself. He said NO! How fucking arrogant can you be? This person who "works" for us can dismiss us so easily? How DARE you tell me that my opinion doesn't matter and how DARE you dismiss what the MAJORITY of the nation feels. To me this is unpatriotic!!

Here is his words of respect for the American people:

Raddatz: Two-thirds of Americans say it’s not worth fighting, and they’re looking at the value gain versus the cost in American lives, certainly, and Iraqi lives.

Cheney: So?

Raddatz: So — you don’t care what the American people think?

Cheney: No, I think you cannot be blown off course by the fluctuations in the public opinion polls. Think about what would have happened if Abraham Lincoln had paid attention to polls, if they had had polls during the Civil War. He never would have succeeded if he hadn’t had a clear objective, a vision for where he wanted to go, and he was willing to withstand the slings and arrows of the political wars in order to get there. And this President has been very courageous, very consistent, very determined to continue down the course we were on and to achieve our objective.

Sick...

Haven't had a chance to post for the last couple of days. With Eva sick (more on that later) and now Mikayla sick, not a lot of time to write. Will try to catch up tomorrow (Fri). Until then enjoy some more Dr. Seuss - and try to say as fast as they do.

Sarah Connor Warned Us...

Boston Dynamics, which specializes in robotics and human simulation, just released video of their "BigDog". What is BigDog and when will it take over the world you ask. BigDog is "the most advanced Quadruped Robot on Earth". It can climb, walk on ice, regain its balance when kicked. It will be taking over the world soon.
BigDog is the alpha male of the Boston Dynamics family of robots. It is a quadruped robot that walks, runs, and climbs on rough terrain and carries heavy loads. BigDog is powered by a gasoline engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system. BigDog's legs are articulated like an animal’s, and have compliant elements that absorb shock and recycle energy from one step to the next. BigDog is the size of a large dog or small mule, measuring 1 (3.2 ft) meter long, 0.7 (2.29 ft) meters tall and 75 kg (165 lbs) weight.

BigDog has an on-board computer that controls locomotion, servos the legs and handles a wide variety of sensors. BigDog’s control system manages the dynamics of its behavior to keep it balanced, steer, navigate, and regulate energetics as conditions vary. Sensors for locomotion include joint position, joint force, ground contact, ground load, a laser gyroscope, and a stereo vision system. Other sensors focus on the internal state of BigDog, monitoring the hydraulic pressure, oil temperature, engine temperature, rpm, battery charge and others.

So far, BigDog has trotted at 3.3 mph, climbed a 35 degree slope and carried a 120 lb load.

The video is below. And you were worried about the economy. I would be worried about this taking over the world.

Dick Head Sings...

Dick Head sings: After YouTube took down a cell phone video recording of the president serenading the White House press corps, Salon’s Scott Bateman put together this animated video to go along with an audio recording of Bush’s song.
(via Towelroad)

Not only is George making fun of all the problems he has caused, the press corps is laughing at it. This is why our news is "fair and balanced"!

Dog Mountain...

Located in St. Johnsbury is a place called Dog Mountain. For any dog lover, this place is amazing. Stephen Huneck is a dog lover and everything that is on Dog Mountain shows that. There are two ponds that your four legged friends can play in with others. There is an art gallery where you can get some great dog works of art (like the one to the left). And for people that have lost their pets (not just dogs), he has created a Dog Chapel. Inside this chapel is a place where you can go to remember your best friend. The walls are covered with thousands of pictures and noted of people animals that have made a difference in someone's life, but are no longer with them. This is the saddest part, but also the best. As you read some of the notes, poems, or letters, you realize just what a difference these little four legged creates make. Now the best part of visiting Dog Mountain with your best friend is that they are allowed to go where ever you are.

Below is a news segment on Dog Mountain and the artist who created this place for people and dogs to enjoy.

Ellen Calls Rep. Sally Kern...

As many have heard by now, Rep. Sally Kern (R-OK) is a homophobe. She was talking with who she thought were a private group of republicans. During this "private" talk, she insinuated that homosexuals were worst than terrorists. She also tried to reiterate the old talking point that religious leaders keep bringing up. That we are trying to "indoctrinate kids" as young as 2-years old. Well Ellen DeGeneres decided that she would call Rep. Sally Kern and have a little chat with her.
The speech, which accused gays of "infiltrating" government posts in order to indoctrinate children in public schools and otherwise further the "homosexual agenda," prompted DeGeneres to attempt a phone call to Kern, to audience applause, during the show's taping.

"I feel like there's some misinformation going on here," Ellen said after playing clips of the speech, "and--I think I need to call her."
(via PageOneQ)

The best part is that Rep. Kern's voice mailbox is full. Has she been receiving some calls from angry people? Could be.

Below is the whole clip of that portion of the speech:

Now the best part is Rep. Kern is defending what she has said:
“To put this simply, as a Christian I believe homosexuality is not moral. Obviously, you have the right as an American to choose that lifestyle, but I also have the right to express my views and my fellow Oklahomans have the right to debate these issues.

“In recent years homosexual activists have begun to aggressively promote their agenda through the political process, often providing substantial financing to candidates who agree with their views, including many running for state legislative races. National publications such as Time, The Atlantic and USA Today have noted that trend. That is their right, just as it is my right to voice opposition to their agenda, which I have been asked to do at several public forums in recent months. That’s what democracy is all about. It appears some homosexual activists believe only one group is allowed a voice in this debate. I disagree.

“A vigorous debate on an issue is not ‘hate speech’ – it’s free speech. I have made clear my opposition to the agenda of homosexual activists, but I have never endorsed or supported any hateful action targeting individuals on the other side of this debate and never will. The fact that many gay rights activists claim anyone opposing their agenda is engaging in ‘hate speech’ says more about them than me.

“Most Oklahomans are socially conservative and believe marriage is a sacred institution, the union of one man and one woman, and that the traditional family is worth protecting and preserving. When I campaigned for office, I promised my constituents to stand up for those values, and I do not apologize for keeping my word.”
(via PageOneQ)
See full video here: Sally Kern

Remember not to long ago I talked about Oklahoma and their homophobia. This was the state that wanted to pass a law that said a child that had gay parents was considered an orphan in their state. This included people traveling through their state.

Finally...

This tells me that our government finally understands that we, as Americans, have the right to protest and have a right to freedom of speech. To bad Rep. Dave Weldon (R-FL) doesn't see that. He feels that if people protest on the street, it's OK. But god forbid that people respectfully protest to our government's face. That would just be wrong. Rep. Dave Weldon, read the Constitution:
Amendment I: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
From the Youtube site:
When Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice testified before the House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday, a contingent from the antiwar group Code Pink was in the back row, holding up bloody hands in protest.

Rep. Dave Weldon (R-FL) found the silent protest difficult to handle and asked the chair if it was possible to eject the protesters. "I've never seen anything like this before," he complained. "We're trying to hold a hearing. I find all these protesters in here really distracting. Is there any kind of rule or policy? ... I'm all for freedom of speech on the street, but we're trying to listen to the Secretary of State here and people are holding up placards."

Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY), who was chairing the hearing, replied, "Dr. Weldon, let me just say I appreciate your comments, but we're here in the United States of America, and as long as they don't disrupt this proceedings, and as long as they're silent, they will be welcome."

"It's a very important hearing but I think it's being turned into a circus," Weldon insisted.

"I respect your views but as long as the protesters are quiet and they sit down and they don't disrupt the hearings, everybody is welcome," Lowey stated again.

After Rice completed her testimony and was leaving the hearing, the protesters began chanting, "The Blood Is on Your Hands" and "Get Us Out of Iraq!"

Fucking Cancer...

Last night we got the news we didn't want to hear. The lump on Eva's foot is a Mast Cell Tumor. What does this mean? It means a lot. A mast cell (or mastocyte) is a resident cell of several types of tissues and contains many granules rich in histamine and heparin. Although best known for their role in allergy and anaphylaxis, mast cells play an important protective role as well, being intimately involved in wound healing and defense against pathogens. (Wikipedia) So what is actually there to help the body has now turned and is beginning to destroy the body.
Mast cell tumors (MCT) are cancerous proliferations of mast cells. Although they can and will spread throughout the body, the danger from mast cell tumors arises from the secondary damage caused by the release of chemicals that they produce. These chemicals can cause systemic problems that include gastric ulcers, internal bleeding, and a range of allergic manifestations. Clearly, mast cell tumors affect both lifespan and quality of life. Sometimes mast cell tumors are referred to as "the great imposters," as there is no way to definitively identify them without a biopsy and pathology report. Mast cell tumors vary widely in their size, shape, appearance, texture, and location. It can be difficult not only to recognize mast cell tumors but to predict their course. They may be relatively innocent or aggressively malignant. As mast cell tumors are very common in dogs, it is important for the regular pet owner to have at least a basic understanding of what they are and how they work.

Here is where we stand. There are three different ways we could go with this. There is radiation, alternative medicine, and western medicine. Radiation is just what you would expect, but there is no place in Vermont that does it. We would have to drive out of state (not sure where) to a vet hospital that does. It is three times a week for three weeks (maybe more). The usual procedure is taking the dog to that hospital and then leaving them for the week and they come home for the weekend. This is very expensive procedure and not really sure if it will take care of the tumor.

Alternative medicine is just that - alternative. Our vet worked with another vet that uses alternative medicine and that would be the person we would go to if we decided to go that way.

The third is Western Medicine. There are three things we could do here. One - prednisone at the regular dosage (which is high) and see if we could shrink the tumor back 50% or more (15-20% chance that it will shrink). The problem with this is there are some side affects (not major). The side affects are drinking a lot of water and peeing excessively. There are some instances that some dogs have had accidents in the house. This would only be a problem for us at night if she doesn't wake us, since I will be home all day. Two - prednisone and two other Chemo drugs (didn't get names). The prednisone and one of the chemo drugs are oral and the third is an IV. This method is very vet intensive since we would have to take her there for the IV medicine. Our vet would be able to do this one. They would also have to do blood monitoring. Third - prednisone at a lower rate as not to create the side affects. This could be OK, but at a lower dosage may not do anything to the tumor. It will also suppress the immune system and may shrink the tumor temporarily, but may also let the tumor get used to the drug and when it grows back may be resistant to the prednisone.

A Mass Cell Tumor will release histamines and cause problems there so we need to put her on antihistamine. We will get them tomorrow. Also, this tumor can cause stomach ulcers. We will have her on an acid reducer to help against this. To actually remove this type of tumor, you need take a 1-inch margin on all sides of the tumor. Since Eva’s tumor is on her foot, even if we reduce the size there isn’t enough space to remove the tumor. And there are more bumps all over her which could be more hidden Mast Cell Tumors. Our main goal now is to make sure Eva’s quality of life is the best it can be. This is the hardest part of an owner’s life. Are we making the right decision?

Preparation...

Today started my new job as babysitter. One of our friends and neighbors asked me to help them one day a week (Tuesdays) to watch their two year old, their 5 1/2 month old, along with Mikayla. A toddler and two infants. I was going to be working from 9:30 in the morning to 3:30 in the afternoon. Now I will not be alone (for the most part), the mother will be there to take the youngest when she needs to nurse and sleep - so why was I worried. The reason is the little monster that I call my daughter. The mother will be working from home and the way Mikayla screams, well need I say more. Mikayla also is in the "I want to be held now put me down" stage. This will be hard when I have the small one in my arms. Then the thoughts of keeping the oldest entertained while I take care of the younger ones. Simple right?

Many may not know this but I have had many days where I had to hand Mikayla over to Mark right when he walked through the door. The best one (which we still talk and laugh about) was a day that I had very little sleep, Mikayla would not stop crying (not sure why), she wanted this and that, the dogs would not stop bugging me and well by 6p.m. I had just about enough. Mark walked in the door at 6. I was at the dinner table with only the light above me on. I stood up, turned to him, handed Mikayla to him, turned away and walked up stairs. No words were said. About 15 minutes later Mark came upstairs and knocked on the bathroom door. The rest is how he tells it because I don't remember it well. He said he opened the door to a dark bathroom, me in the tub with bubble bath all around, my arm covering my eyes and me not saying anything. He asked if I wanted some wine and there was some sort of sound that he understood as a yes.

So as you can tell, Mikayla can be a little draining on me and I was scared that having three would be too much. My sister had three. I have a friend in California that has three (really four with her husband). I know people do this on a daily basis and I was only doing it for six hours one day a week. Mark tells me that it is in preparation for our next one (or our third).

Well the day was really uneventful. Mikayla played with the oldest. She really didn't climb on me that much. She didn't scream (until we got home) that much and overall it was fine. I think I can handle three kids with no problem. No problem that is if I only have them one day a week!!

Eva, Surgery (Day Two)...

I called the vets office around 2:30p.m. yesterday (Monday) to find out the status of Eva. They had an emergency that morning so they were just getting done with Eva. Again they thought the bump was a abscess, but when they tried to perforate the area, nothing came out. For those that don't know what an abscess on an animal does, it fill with pus and looks like tapioca pudding when you squeeze it out. Although this is gross, it's nothing to be worried too much about. The problem they had was nothing was coming out. Our vet made a bigger incision, but the only thing they could see was a bloody, clotty mess. They took a sample of the tissue and cleaned the area up as best they could.

When Mark got out of work, we went up to pick Eva up. She was laying right where I had left her that morning, but now her leg was bandaged. She was coming off some really good drugs (it seemed) and wasn't really with us just yet. Her ears and tail perked up as we walked into the office, but she didn't get up. Mark walked over to her and started to comfort her as we talked with the vet. They told us again what they found and why it worried them. The area could be many things.

The area looked like a clotty bloody tumor. She is not sure if it is or isn't. She was saying that it could be a Hemangiosarcoma, but not sure. It is unlikely since these tend to be found in the liver, heart, stomach, but they have developed elsewhere as well. The only way to be sure is to send off a sample of tissue. Now the good side is the reason she doesn't think that this was a Hemangiosarcoma is that they are aggressive and the bump would have blown up faster (when we first saw it). So now is the waiting game.

We have sent the tissue up to be tested to find out what it is (hopefully nothing) and should hear back by Thursday or Friday of this week. There was another problem as well. The area that was opened was not clotting like it should. They took Eva out earlier in the day and when they got back her foot was all bloody and leaking really well. So we were given a Chinese herb that is supposed to help with clotting (only in Vermont), another antibiotic, and more of the pain killers. The antibiotics are in hopes that there is a possibility that this is still a very bad infection. That the bump somehow got infected and just blew up. These antibiotics have a wide spectrum and should take care of it if it is.

So, where you see her in the picture is where she will be for the next couple of days unless she is going outside for a bathroom break. It also seems that her foot isn't bleeding as much and she had a longer walk today to finally poop (its been since Thursday night). Again, we just wait to see what happens now.

Dance...

Now when you watch this video, you will notice Mikayla using various methods of dance - Ballet, Jazz, and many more. Also take notice of her Diva lean at the end. Martha Graham watch out!

Excess...

Unfortunately, the society in which we live promotes and encourages extreme excess, and, we eagerly attempt to keep up even to our own demise. Material “wealth” means more to our society than financial security. Bankruptcies and foreclosures are at an all-time high. The relaxation of our morals has led to an increase in the promotion of promiscuity over modesty. We constantly hear about the sexual misconduct of others. With society’s promotion of extreme material excess (Hummer’s, homes beyond our means, etc), public tolerance of sexual perversions and alcoholism (I think we’ve become accepting of the entry into rehab as a form of public apology, and forgotten the punishment part), and the inability of many of us to moderate our consumption of food we are all rapidly spiraling downward. These excesses certainly contribute to the injustices of society such as theft as an effort to neutralize the differences in material wealth, alcoholism and the way it adversely impacts others, sexual perversions with some of our most precious being victimized as well as our own inabilities to see our addiction to food as a health problem for an entire society.

I am trying to have my family understand that we don’t need all this excess. When asked what I want for Christmas, I tell my family to donate to a charity in my name (humane society, JDRF). I get the response, no really, what do you want? When I read all the problems that are facing America now, they all seem to follow the same premise – we, as Americans, have too much. But the people that have too much agree, but they still want more.

I live in a modest house that some would consider a “fixer-upper”, but it is home. I live in no more than 1800 sq feet of living space with my partner, my baby (with plans of another one), three dogs and one cat, but is it enough. I think so. I also think that it may be too much. I wanted the two-story house with four bedrooms and two and a half baths and acreage. Why is this important? It’s important because our society says this is what you need to be happy. Marketing also says to be the person everyone else is you need own more. For no other reason than America is the land of abundance.

Everyday I am bombarded with ways to make my teeth whiter, make myself skinnier, earn $12,000 (or more) a month by working at home, re-mortgage my house to pay off my credit card debt, but I am also pre-approved for this card or that. We are nothing but lemmings in the “Luxurious” world. Our society is set up for us to fail, but we continue to want more. After the attacks of 9/11, did Bush ask us to mourn, to grieve, to take time and remember that we are one in this terrible tragedy. No he asked everyone to go shopping. The gap between the rich and poor is growing more and more each day. Right now 40% of the world’s wealth is owned by only 1% of the population. We want what they have. We want to be rich. Excess is the American way of life and no matter how much I hate it, I am still a part of it.

Eva, Surgery...

Well we are back and with us being back, Eva is at the Vet this morning having surgery. As you can see from the picture, Eva has a large bump on her right leg. This bump has been there for quite sometime, but at the beginning of last week if decided to grow. It started to impede Eva's ability to walk. She started to limp and if she tried to run it put her up for the rest of the day. Last Monday (March 3) I was going to call the vet and set up an appointment, but it didn't seem to be all that bad so we decided to wait thinking that it just got inflamed when she decided to run out the door like a puppy (which she does often). I may have forgotten to mention that Eva is an 80 pound 13 1/2 year old dog. Running like a puppy should not be what she is doing.

On Friday Morning Eva's foot was looking worse so we decided to see if our vet could look at her. The prognosis was that the bump created an abscess. The filling of pus made it grow and grow. We were given some pain killers and antibiotics to hopefully take care of the inflammation. We were told to soak it two to three times a day and this should allow for the abscess to "burst" open and we could take care of it that way. They felt this was the best thing to do so we wouldn't have to put Eva under.

We then headed down to Mark's mother's. We got there Friday night and by Saturday morning Eva's foot had swelled to twice it's normal size, red, and bleeding a little. She could hardly put any weight on it and mainly laid on the floor where we put here. We called the vet again (they are great) and she told us to soak the foot more often. This would help with the pain and since it was bleeding a little, it would more than likely "burst" soon - joy!

So we soaked and soaked and just like Eva, the bump was being stubborn. Nothing happened. Another thing you need to know about Eva is that she HATES to get her feet wet. If it had just rained and she needs to go out, she will walk on her tip-toes just so her whole foot doesn't get wet. While we were at Mark's moms, it poured all day Saturday. There was a little snow, but not much. Eva needed to go out. I carried her to the door and down the stairs and then she started to walk around. She walked to an area that had some snow and just like a 13 year old dog (who thinks herself a puppy) she dove into the snow and started to roll around. Legs in the air, rain hitting her, and her tail wagging away.

We got back last night (Sunday) and made another call to the vet. Told her that it wasn't getting better and that she hasn't pooped in three days (can't balance) and the painkillers don't seem to be working well. So this morning I took our little old lady in to have surgery. They are going to be opening up the bump and letting all the pus out. In some way I am glad they are doing it and not me having to deal with it.

But it doesn't stop there. Eva is the type of dog that HATES stitches. Stitches are the devils work and she needs to pull them out. When she had surgery two to three years ago, we had to take turns watching her through the night. Mark would stay up with her until 3a.m and then wake me to take over. So if she needs stitches again, this is how it goes: baby isn't sleeping calmly through the night, Mark is starting new Marketing classes (two this term), I ma finishing up my finals for my classes (two) and watching Eva's foot and making sure she doesn't pull the stitches out. Pray for us - it will be a long week.

On The Road...

Did not get a chance to post anything yesterday (Thursday) due to trying to get school work done before we left for Mark's mothers. When we get down there I will make a post to tell everyone how we did with the boarder patrol. Long story. We are taking the back way because if we go through it, I know Mark will say something that will get us tossed in jail. To give you a hint, the boarder patrol isn't even near the boarder!!!

Wish us luck!!

The News...

While I was watching the primaries last night like a lot of other people, Mark decided that he was going to see what was really going on in our wonderful nation. The primaries are important, but what Mark found showed me that the news could have been doing a little more.

Here is Guest Blogger - Mark:

The Corporation...

A Company will use marketing to target the individual that their advertising will benefit. Advertising is what people see and triggers something that makes them eager to buy the product.

When I watched the movie “The Corporation” sometime ago, I remembered an interview with the vice president of Initiative Media, Lucy Hughes. “Initiative is a leading global media communications agency.” Lucy is the Co-Creator of “the Nag Factor”. This is a study done to see who will buy their kids products when the kids nag their parents. Lucy explains how I see how marketing works. Marketing is when “you can manipulate consumers into wanting and therefore buying your products.” Keyword: manipulate. With this “research”, this company has started to target our kids. They know that, “Kids are tomorrows adult consumers. Start talking with them now, build that relationship when younger and you get them as an adult”.

Companies are using physiologists to target certain groups of people with their products. Marketing sets down where to put advertising, who companies should aim their message at, and how to make the advertising appealing. With the help of marketing, companies, with a creative execution, place ads in certain types of media. Look at the Super Bowl. Companies spend Millions of dollars on a placement for their products.

Below is the first chapter of the film. You can watch the film in its entirety on Youtube.

This is from the makers of the documentary’s website:
“One day a whole lot of comments on the film The Corporation appeared in our online forum. It turned out they were from Mr. Urban’s Grade 8 class. Mr. Urban first saw the film while channel flicking on TV Ontario. “Urbs,” as he is known, thought he would bring it to his class and he worked it into his curriculum all year.”
Here is a short video of the kids they talked with:

Marty McConnell...

I was searching the web for god only knows what, but I am sure it was something for my school work, when I came across these videos. They are part of Def Poetry which recognizes the power of urban poetry on modern culture. Top rap music impresario Simmons, whose Def Jam Records launched the careers of artists such as LL Cool J and Jay-Z, teamed up with HBO to create Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry in 2001, turning the spotlight on the freshest and most fearless voices in America today.

The person I found to hit me where I think is Marty McConnell. Marty McConnell transplanted herself from Chicago to New York City in 1999, after completing three national tours with the Morrigan, an all-female performance poetry troupe she co-founded. She received her MFA in creative writing/poetry from Sarah Lawrence College, and competed in the 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 National Poetry Slams with the NYC/Union Square team. She is a member of the louderARTS Project, which runs two reading series, ongoing workshops and collaborative performances in NYC. (see rest of Bio here)

Here are two works by here. The first deals with the frustration that many (myself included) feel about America, especially after Tuesday night's (March 4th) primaries and with wonderful feeling that McCain will be the next George Bush.

Marine Mistreats Puppy...

This is a disturbing video of a marine tossing a puppy off a cliff in Iraq. The video show three Marines laughing while one of the Marines holds the puppy by the scruff of the neck. After laughing at the puppy, the Marine that is holding the puppy tosses the puppy over a cliff (more than likely to its death). The other Marines laugh and tell him that that was mean. All the Marines laughed at the incident! The Marine that tossed the puppy didn't seem to care!

The Marine that killed the puppy is now back in Hawaii and the Marine Corp is investigating. The Marine Corp has released a statement stating:
"This video is shocking and deplorable and is contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine... We do not tolerate this type of behavior and will take appropriate action."
This video is very disturbing and is the reason that most of the world hates the U.S. When you see people like this Marine laughing at the senseless murder of another living creature, it pisses people off. It pissed me off. Below is the video from MSNBC:

The part of this story that nobody seems to connect is something that I had written about in an earlier post called Cruelty: The Animal/Human Connection. The problem that many people seem to overlook is the fact that this man (allegedly) abused a puppy and may carry the abuse over to humans.

In three surveys in women’s shelters in Wisconsin and Utah in the late 1990’s an average of 74% of pet-owning women reported that a pet had been threatened, injured or killed by the abusers. (Ascione 1995 &1997 and Quinlisk, 1995)

A study by the Royal SPCA in Great Britain found that 83% of families with a history of animal abuse had also been identified by the social service agencies as at-risk for child abuse or neglect. (Hutton, 1981)

“FBI Special Agent Alan Brantley, who works in the bureau’s behavioral science unit, said agents asked 36 multiple murderers in prison if they had abused animals. About a third said they killed and tortured animals as children, and about half said they did it as adolescents.” LA Times Magzine

Peek-A-Boo...

With in the last week, Mikayla has been using anything she can get her hands on to play Peek-A-Boo. It really didn't start with us covering our faces and pulling our hands away. It started with a book called "Baby Faces". In this book is a baby under a basket and it ask "Where's Baby" and on the next page it has the baby uncovered with the caption "Peek-A-Boo!". Mark and I started covering Mikayla's face with our hands when we ask where's baby and pulling them away for Peek-A-Boo. This progressed to a towel and then to anything that she could find to cover her face. This is a game that you will not win!

Below are two videos of Mikayla playing Peek-A-Boo:

Animal Testing...

As I have mentioned in previous posts, we are members of the local coop. Today I just received their bi-monthly newsletter and in it was an article on "Cloned Animal Products" and "Clorox Going Green". Nothing in the article about Clorox mentioned that they still do animal testing. The coop only seemed excited that a "small environmentally-responsible body care product company" could possibly encourage Clorox to go "green". Being an animal advocate, I of course had to write them and explain why Clorox is still evil. To find out what companies are still using inhumane animal testing, go here:
Caring Consumer

Below is my email to the editor of the newsletter and the Wellness manager (who wrote the article on Clorox).

I am a member of the Hunger Mountain Coop and an animal advocate. I just read the March/April edition of "The Full Scoop" and noticed that there was another article on Burt's Bees and Clorox. The article tells of how Clorox will be going "green" by 2013, but it doesn't mention anything about how Clorox is still doing animal testing for their products. This bothered me since the first article was concerning "Cloned Animal Products" and how the Coop "opposes the practice of animal cloning and will not knowingly sell products derived from cloned animals". I would like to ask what the policy is for carrying products from companies that do testing on animals? I hope you feel the same about animal testing as you do about animal cloning. Your commitment to the environment is admirable, please tell me that the same applies to saving our animals.

The process of testing products on animals is now looked on as archaic by most since there are non-animal test available. One of the test that companies use is the Draize Eye Irritancy Test. This is an acute toxicity test devised in 1944 by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) toxicologist John H. Draize. The procedure involves applying 0.5mL or 0.5g of a test substance to an animal's eye or skin for four hours. The animals are observed for up to 14 days, for signs of erythema and edema in the skin test, and redness, swelling, discharge, ulceration, hemorrhaging, cloudiness, or blindness in the tested eye. The test subject is commonly an albino rabbit. According to the National Anti-Vivisection Society, the animals are killed after the test. (Wikipedia) Another test is the “Lethal Dose Test”. This is where certain chemicals are pumped into the stomach and lungs of the test animals until they die. These test should not happen since scientist have developed artificial skin and bones on which products can be tested. Scientist can even test vaccines with out the use of animals.

But some companies, such as Clorox, still feel the need to do testing on animals. I understand that Hunger Mountain Coop is looking to help the environment, but I hope that you are also looking to help the animals that are needlessly tested on and then killed because certain companies have decided that animal testing is good for America. Although I may not be purchasing Clorox, I am still giving money to a company that test on animals when I purchase something like Burt's Bees. This is not good. I would like to know that your organization feels the same about animal testing as it does about the environment. Although Clorox is now working to go green (good thing), there is nothing that states they are stopping animal testing!!!

Thank you for your time,

Paul
I have also included a video put out by PETA about animal testing.

Three Dogs Shot...

A father faces three felony counts of animal cruelty charges after investigators say he admitted to killing his family's three dogs.

Forty-one year old Sheldon Johnson, nicknamed Tex, was arrested Tuesday after investigators say he became angry at his children because they were not taking care of their two pitbull puppies and dalmation and shot them execution style in front of the children.

"As a father myself it's hard for me to believe that anybody would do this in front of their kids," said Buncombe County Sheriff's Public Information Officer Ross Dillingham. "It doesn't make any sense. It's disgusting."

According to a police report, Johnson returned home around 1:30 Tuesday morning afand had been drinking. He then became involved in a domestic argument with his fiance and children over what he thought was a lack of care for the animals, grabbed a gun, went outside and shot the dogs.

"It's unexcusable to show that to any child, any age," said Julie Frizsell, Johnson's neighbor. "Those dogs didn't do anything. It shocked me. I was speechless. Those kids were innocent and those dogs were innocent. He deserves to be punished."

Investigators tell WSPA-TV that Johnson, who has been released on bail, has also faced previous charges of assault, driving while impaired and hit-and-run.

Healthy...

Just got back from the Coop, and unknowingly I had spent over $90. Everytime I get to the checkout lane I am always surprised (even though I shouldn't be). This is what we have to pay to eat healthy and local. I don't think that I bought anything that wasn't under $5. Everything that is organic or healthy is still way over priced. The coop allows us to purchase items that are organic, local, or not filled with Red #40 and other things that can kill us. I am just wondering how people can afford this. I truly believe that if I were not with Mark (he is turning me into a hippie), I would be eating all the crap I usually eat.

This is how we paid off all our bills while in Florida. We would get the Sunday paper and clip the coupons. We would look at the stores fliers (which we had four stores in our general area) and write down what was on sale. We then cross-referenced Mark's little (I mean little) cheat sheet as to where we could buy something for the cheapest price. The cheat sheet was broken down by price per pound. We would then make a list of what we needed for the week. We would also over buy if the price was so low that it couldn't be passed up. We would then go from store to store to get what we needed. We would hit every store and this would take us about an hour and a half to do. We wouldn't spend over $50 per week, but we always had enough to eat and always had groceries to spare.

I think back on this and ask myself what the hell I put in my body. Almost everything we had was processed and full of unhealthy chemicals (as if there are healthy chemicals). I remember we would buy hamburger for $.98 per pound. Now I think back and wonder how long this had been sitting around and why was it so cheap.

I keep thinking about the election and that what is talked about most is health care. I truly think that our health would be so much better if all the facts were given to us. If people in the Dept. of Ag realize that downed cattle are not best for human consumption. That people realize that all the chemicals that you put in your body actually causes problems later in life. We need to wake up and start supporting our local farms. Why do we need to buy lettuce from Indonesia and raisins from China? Why can't the government start to be truthful with us and stop playing games with our lives. The only way we can get healthy is by eating healthy. Stop putting the shit into our bodies and stop making it sound like genetically altered food is the wave of the future.

BAD SEED: The Truth About Our Food
