Shepard Fairey, the graphic designer and illustrator who created the iconic images for Obama's campaign, has turned his focus to the current fight for equality in the gay and lesbian community, designing a poster intended specifically for use at this weekend's rallies in California and elsewhere. The image is inspired by the art of a young man named Aaron Harvey. Thanks to the donations of two print sources, posters will be donated for the rally this Saturday at City Hall, which is part of the larger nationwide action called Join the Impact. More info will be forthcoming later today.

I was on a blog site called 23/6 reading something about Bush (nothing good mind you) and I happened to notice this ad from Google. Not only did this person lose 12 Lbs in two weeks, she went from black to white (pasty white at that). So remember people when you see ads, they are there to make money - from you!

This video has been out for a while, but I finally watched it today. Olbermann lays it all out plain and simple and says something that I have said form many years - With so much hate in the world, how is loving the person that I do so wrong?

And here are people overjoyed at the prospect of just that chance, and that work, just for the hope of having that feeling. With so much hate in the world, with so much meaningless division, and people pitted against people for no good reason, this is what your religion tells you to do? With your experience of life and this world and all its sadnesses, this is what your conscience tells you to do?

With your knowledge that life, with endless vigor, seems to tilt the playing field on which we all live, in favor of unhappiness and hate... this is what your heart tells you to do? You want to sanctify marriage? You want to honor your God and the universal love you believe he represents? Now I understand where the kids get their hatred. I am referring to the post below this one.

VAY (AP) - A sign erected by a northern Idaho landowner that advertises a "free public hanging" of President-elect Barack Obama and several other political figures is being investigated by the U.S. Secret Service.

Bonner County Sheriff Elaine Savage said she and a Secret Service agent from Spokane, Wash., planned to take a firsthand look at the sign put up by Ken Germana.

"That's a political statement," Germana told the Bonner County Daily Bee. "They can call it whatever they want, a threat or whatever."

The handmade white cardboard sign posted to a tree has the words "FREE PUBLIC HANGING" written in large orange letters. A noose fashioned from a length of rope hangs down the middle of the sign.

The name of the Democratic Illinois senator is written in equally large letters near the bottom of the sign. In smaller letters are the names of Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and civil rights activist and former presidential candidate Al Sharpton.

My God. It amazes me that in 2008 we have so much hatred in this country. These people are really beginning to sound like domestic terrorists. "According to a memo produced by the FBI's Terrorist Research and Analytical Center in 1994, domestic terrorism was defined as 'the unlawful use of force or violence, committed by a group(s) of two or more individuals, against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.'" The FBI should be have this person in custody, but as we saw in the McCain rally's, the verbal threats against ACORN and Obama, that will never happen. How can the color of one's skin produce so much hatred in a country that is supposed to be so far advanced. What I see is a country that is still trying to grow up.

Where do kids get their ideas? They don't just pull them out of their ass. From what we saw in the McCain campaign, the hatred comes from the parents and their friends. Why is it that these people feel that wanting someone dead is better than the terrorist that we are fighting? These people are no better and to pass this hatred on to their kids just floors me.

REXBURG - Controversial words spoken by kids on a school bus have some Madison County parents concerned.

Matthew Whoolery and his wife aren't blaming the school district for what happened on the bus but they do think all parents need to be careful about what they say and teach their children.

Whoolery and his wife couldn't believe it when their second and third graders got off the bus last week and told them what other students were saying.

"They just hadn't heard anything like this before," said Whoolery. "They were chanting on the bus, 'Assassinate Obama. Assassinate Obama.' Then adding in a name sometimes of a classmate on the bus, 'Assassinate Obama and Kate.'"

Nadar: Is Obama Going To Be Uncle Sam or Uncle Tom...

Now I am a little surprised that Fox News actually defended Obama, but if they didn't they would have had major backlash. Also the journalist that stood up to Nadar is the same that journalist that stood up to "Joe the Plumber". Shepard Smith has become the one redeeming thing about Fox Snooze. Here is how Nadar (who barly made a mark in this election) started his interview:

(Obama's) choice, basically, is whether he's going to be Uncle Sam for the people of this country or Uncle Tom for the giant corporations.

Smith, with a look of disgust, had only one response - "Really?" and then a long pause, "Ralph Nadar" another long pause, "What was that?". The rest is Nadar defending himself and his comments and Smith getting more and more disgusted. It's one for the books. Of course many people in the McCain Campaign will probably start to support this biggot.

At the end of the interview there was this exchange as well:

Smith: I just wonder, if in hindsight, you wished you used a phrase other than Uncle Tom?

Nadar (with some form of sarcasm): Not At All!

Fox News Actually Doing Its Job...

It just amazes me that the McCain Campaign (or any campaign) had such power over the press. If this was a true "free press" all this would have been out during the campaign. Why would the press (or the people on the campaigns not in power) have the need to deceive the American people. Oh Yeah - POWER!! Some of what is in the video is below, but you have to watch the whole thing. It will make you glad that Obama won. Just as a little note - a possible Vice President didn't know who was in NAFTA. It tells you right there in the name - North American Free Trade Agreement. My GOD! We side-stepped a bullet on this one.

Cameron: I wish I could have told you more at the time but all of it was put off the record until after the election. There was great concern in the McCain campaign that Sarah Palin lack the degree of knowledgeability necessary to be a running mate, a vice president, and a heartbeat away from the presidency. We're told by folks that she didn't know what countries that were in NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, that being the Canada, the US, and Mexico. We're told she didn't understand that Africa was a continent rather than a country just in itself ... a whole host of questions that caused serious problems about her knowledgeability. She got very angry at staff, thought that she was mishandled.....was particularly angry about the way the Katie Couric interview went. She didn't accept preparation for that interview when the aides say that that was part of the problem. And that there were times that she was hard to control emotionally there's talk of temper tantrums at bad news clippings......

Notwithstanding that there is to be an avalanche that will continue for many days now we're told of story upon story of the foibles of Sarah Palin.

She actually "thought Africa was a country, not a continent." This led, among other things, to her asking how, in that case, South Africa could be a separate country.

We've decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and we're taking the other Blue States with us. In case you aren't aware, that includes California , Hawaii , Oregon , Washington , Minnesota , Wisconsin , Michigan , Illinois and all the Northeast. We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially to the people of the new country of New California. 

To sum up briefly: You get Texas , Oklahoma and all the slave states. We get stem cell research and the best beaches. We get the Statue of Liberty. You get Dollywood. We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom. We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss. We get 85 percent of America 's venture capital and entrepreneurs. You get Alabama . We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the red states pay their fair share.

 Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a bunch of single moms. Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and anti-war, and we're going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have kids they're apparently willing to send to their deaths for no purpose, and they don't care if you don't show pictures of their children's caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq , and hope that the WMDs turn up, but we're not willing to spend our resources in Bush's Quagmire.

No this is not a clip from the new Harry Potter movie. This is actually one of McCain's spokesman, Michael Goldfarb, who is still trying to make a connection between Obama and anti-Semite people.

But CNN's Rick Sanchez calls Goldfarb out for the hypocrisy of hyping a sinister connection between Obama and a guy that McCain funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars to, and from there, Goldfarb goes right off the rails, refusing to answer Sanchez's questions with anything other than intimations. Repeatedly asked to name a second anti-Semite that Obama allegedly "pals around with," Goldfarb does nothing but issue hollow, Page Six-style intimations.

You have to watch this video to see what a complete incompetent fool this person is. If he has another name, I would want to know about it, but what I see is someone who is acting lilke a third grader and complaining that someone took his cookie. What a sad day that people can make acusations and then sit there with a little smirk on their faces and someone (probably the people that hate blacks) will belive this little piece of shit.

Reverend Peter Mullen, the Chaplain to the London Stock Exchange, is under fire for suggesting that gays be branded with sodomy warning tattoos:

Said Mullen: "It is time that religious believers began to recommend ... discouragements of homosexual practices after the style of warnings on cigarette packets. Let us make it obligatory for homosexuals to have their backsides tattooed with the slogan 'SODOMY CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH' and their chins with 'FELLATIO KILLS'."

Mullen also called for the banning of gay pride parades, and wrote a poem mocking the recent blessing of the union of two gay priests by Reverend Martin Dudley.

The Evening Standard reports: "The poem begins: 'The Bishop of London is in a high huff, Because Dr Dudley has married a puff; And not just one puff - he's married another: Two priests, two puffs and either to other.' The ceremony, which took place in the summer, was roundly condemned by the Bishop of London, the Rt Rev Richard Chartres, as a breach of Church of England rules."

The Bishop of London called Mullen's marks "highly offensive" and gay rights group Stonewall UK is calling for Mullen's resignation.

Cough and Cold Medicine Do Not Work - A Must Watch If You Have Kids...

We really have abundance scientific data now showing that these products do not reduce congestion and do not reduce cough in children who have colds. Number two; they pose risks particularly in children under two but even in older children. We have so much data now of serious side affects occurring when parents gives these products to young children.

According to MSNBC, Rosie O'Donnell will be making a comeback to television with her own variety show. The show, called Rosie’s Variety Show, will be airing on NBC the night before Thanksgiving. If people embrace this new adventure from Rosie NBC will more than likely take it to a full series.

The special will feature celebrity guests, musical acts, comedy skits and a prize give-away for the show’s in-studio and home audiences.

The show’s Nov. 26 airdate manages to trump Fox’s upcoming variety show starring Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, which is expected to debut in the winter or spring.

For NBC, the project’s live aspect is of particular interest, both as a way of distinguishing the product from competitors and to discourage viewers from recording the show for later viewing. NBC has aired “America’s Got Talent” results shows live this year and plans a quartet of “Saturday Night Live” primetime specials.

“This will reinvent the idea of what a variety show is for 2008,” NBC vice president alternative Craig Plestis said. “There’s very few performers willing to put themselves out there live. It makes it more TiVo-proof, and it’s something none of the cable networks can do.”

How's deregulation working these days? Wasn't industry supposed to self-regulate? You know it's bad when the Bush FDA gets off its butt and actually says something that alerts consumers to a problem.

A chemical blamed for sickening infants in China has been found in candy on American shelves.

Connecticut consumer protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell Jr. said Wednesday that tests on White Rabbit Creamy Candy found melamine.

The candy has been found in stores in Connecticut. It was imported from China and sold primarily at Asian markets.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended last week that consumers not eat White Rabbit candy and that retailers remove it. Queensway Foods Company Inc. of California distributed the candy and says it is recalling it.

Melamine is used in plastics manufacturing and has been associated with contaminated infant formula and other Chinese products containing milk protein.

Not only is candy potentially something to make you sick, now pediatricians are requesting that the FDA recalls child's cold medicine.

Pediatricians are urging the Food and Drug Administration, which scheduled a public hearing Thursday on the issue, to demand a recall of the medicines for children younger than 6.
"Parents should know that there is less evidence than ever to support the use of over-the-counter cough and cold medicines for young children," said Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, Baltimore's health commissioner. "There is nothing that is holding the FDA back from asking for a voluntary recall now of products marketed to kids under 6."

Of course this will never happen since parents spend more than $286 million on this type of medicine.

It turns out that when the FDA set standards for cough and cold medicines some 30 years ago, no separate studies were done for kids.

Cough and cold medicines send about 7,000 children to hospital emergency rooms each year with symptoms ranging from hives and drowsiness to unsteady walking. Low doses of a medicine are not likely to cause a problem; the main risk comes from unintentional overdoses.
The same ingredients usually are found in different products. For example, giving a child a cough syrup and a decongestant could inadvertently lead to an overdose.

How scary is that.

Apple Picking...

This last Saturday was one of the best days that we have had in a long time. Mark, Mikayla, and I decided that we needed some time away from our "normal" life (read: school, canning, garden), so we took up an offer from our neighbors to go apple picking. The place we went was called Douglas Orchards and is located in Shoreham, Vermont. Our neighbors have been going here for years and they love it.

The drive took about an hour and a half and was very pleasant. I got to talk with Nancy, which I don't get to do often. Jon and Nancy's son, Gabe, is four now and we talked about the different stages that the kids were going through. Mikayla is in one right now that I will touch on in another post. The only distress that I had was riding in the back of the van. I was reading a book to Gabe (which is not smart for me) and then we started to go around many curves (again not good). I started to get real nauseated and my head started to spin. I held it together and we arrived at the orchard.

The day was beautiful and the place was amazing. The trees were all full with perfect apples. I was in awe. As you can see from the pictures below, you couldn't find a tree that was not full of apples. At the end of the picture I included a video of the day as well.

McCain Plays Dumb - Once Again...

While Wall Street is crashing, McCain tries to support his "Fat Cat" Carley Fiorina and her "Golden Parachute" from Hewlett Packard. She was FIRED in 2005 and still walked away with $40 million. Following Bush's address last night, congressman Barney Franks told reporters: "I’m glad the president said what he said. It’s not that making the speech was going to help, but failure to make a speech was probably hurting. In America, if you don’t hear from the president, it’s not a crisis."

He then laid into the White House 'photo-op':

"All of a sudden, now that we’re on the verge of making a deal, John McCain drops himself in to make a deal. I really worry about this politicization of it. Frankly, we’re going to have to interrupt a negotiating session tomorrow between the Democrats and Republicans on a bill, where I think we’re getting pretty close, and troop down to the White House for their photo-op, and then come back and get on to it. We’re trying to rescue the economy, not the McCain campaign."

Letterman Slams McCain For Suspending His Campaign...

Dave said what the rest of the country is thinking, "What are you going to do if you're elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We've got a guy like that now!"

Here is a clip from Billy Boy's Fox Snooze show where he is debating the law with a lawyer - and he says she is wrong and doesn't understand what she is talking about. How arrogant is this dip shit and how can so many people consider him a journalist? To me he sits right alongside Jerry Springer.

The conversation deals with the hacking of Sarah Palin's email account. Billy wants the person who hacked the email to be prosecuted (as they should) as well as the website that posted the emails - two different people. According to the Supreme Court, Billy, there is something called the First Amendment and the person that posted the emails on their website falls under it. Near the end the attorney gives Billy a scenario. She said "what if someone obtained a document illegally that proved a massive conspiracy among the presidential candidates, and they leaked it to Fox News. And we knew it was stolen. You don't think we would put it on the air? You're darn right we would put it on the air."

Billy's response, "Oh, I'd have to see". Yes he would have to see. If it were a document that made McCain look bad, they would destroy it. If it made Obama look bad, it would be the story to end all stories. Again, why people. This man is a joke and an ass.

In April Madonna created a youtube video promoting her single, “Four Minutes” from her album “Hard Candy”. In the video she is vacuuming the set of the video. She jokingly complains that she has to do all the cleanup work herself “as usual”.

Well in Diva fashion, Bette Midler has done a parody of the video to promote her new album “Jackpot: The Best Bette,” which will be released on September 23. In the video (which she is on the set of her new movie “The Women”) Bette plays it as her character in the movie. I have both videos below as well as the trailer for the Women 2008 and some classic lines from the 1939 version.

Now I have always thought that the best way to make this play (movie) a classic is to have a bunch of gay men or drag queens play the parts. Since that never came to be, having some of the top gay icons in the movie is fine with me. Yes I do have the 1939 movie and have seen it many many times. Don't Judge!

Animal shelter workers are trying to figure out who killed 10 kittens - and why.

A parking lot sweeper found six dead kittens Thursday - the day after the animals were stolen from Springdale Animal Services. Five of the kittens were four weeks old and were taken from their mother, who was pining for them.

"We've been asking 'why' all day," said Teresa Johnson, the shelter's assistant manager. "Why?"

The six dead kittens were among 20 cats released from their cages during a break-in Wednesday, said Jill Hatfield, the superintendent of the Fayetteville Animal Shelter. Four other dead kittens were found at the Springdale shelter.

"They did terrible things," she said. "Some were thrown in dog pens inside the shelter. Luckily none of the dogs did anything."

The fate of the other 10 kittens wasn't known. It's possible they escaped.

Nothing was stolen in the break-in.

The Humane Society of the Ozarks is offering a $2,500 reward.

Police are investigating whether the break-in is related to one at the Fayetteville shelter last month. The night of Aug. 9, someone freed dogs and cats from their cages.

"They didn't harm any of the animals at our shelter, so we aren't sure if the two incidents are related," Hatfield said.

Animal cruelty is a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum sentence of one year in jail. Arkansas is one of only five states in the country with animal cruelty laws that do not have felony provisions.

"We want these folks caught," Hatfield said.

Update:
The Humane Society of the United States is offering a $ 2, 500 reward for information in connection with the break-in at Springdale Animal Services that left 11 kittens dead and 10 more missing.

Someone entered through an unlocked window overnight Wednesday at 321 Randall Wobbe Road, opened all the cat cages and killed four kittens by throwing them against the ground, shelter officials said.

Seven kittens wearing shelter collars were found dead Thursday morning in The Home Depot parking lot at 675 E. Joyce Blvd. in Fayetteville.

Animal control was called out to a house in Madill after dead puppies and malnourished dogs were found in the backyard. Authorities say residents have already been warned about an excessive number of animals living in the home. KTEN's Hailee Holliday reports.

Over 15-dogs were either chained up or in pens in the backyard and 4-puppies were found dead.

Animal control and police were notified about the situation at the house on 3rd street.

The residents of the house were not home at the time.

Authorities say the dogs were extremely malnourished and having this many animals in the city is against the law.

They also claim more dogs were inside the house.

Animal Control Officer, Jeremy Proctor, says, "You're only allowed to have 3 dogs within city limits so these people have way too many. We're going to do an investigation and we're going to take the dogs outside the residence and do a further investigation to see what else needs to be done.'

There have been no charges so far on the owner of the dogs.

Animal control say they will pick up the dogs and have a veterinarian check them.

Authorities say if charged, the owner of the dogs could face animal cruelty charges.

Salsa...

This last weekend we made salsa. Actually this is the second time we made salsa. The first was the weekend prior when we went to Mark's mom's house to do our annual salsa fest. This actually was only the second year, but it will continue for many more. Mark's mother found the perfect salsa recipe. The problem with this recipe is that when one person does it, it takes almost four to five hours. It's an all day event.

Along with the salsa, we made tomato relish. This goes on almost anything - well OK anything. The reason it is so good - sugar.

The picture above is the salsa. Below are the recipes - enjoy:

Salsa (usually doubled)

10 cups peeled, cored, chopped red ripe tomatoes (approx 6 pounds)
5 cups seeded, chopped long green peppers (approx 2 pounds)
5 cups chopped onions (approx 1.5 pounds)
1 6oz can tomato paste
2.5 cups seeded, chopped hot peppers (approx 1 lb)
1.25 cups cider vinegar
3 cloves garlic
2 tbsp cilantro
3 tsp salt
t tsp hot pepper sauce (optional)

Combine all ingredients in a lrge sauce pot. Bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes. Pour hot into hot jars, leaving 1/4 inch head space. Adjust caps. Process 15 minutes in a boiling bath. Yield: approx 12 pints.

Tomato Relish (usually doubled)

12 large ripe tomatoes, peeled and sliced, about 4 pounds
4 large onions, peeled and sliced, about 1 1/2 pounds
salt
6 red chili peppers
2 cups vinegar
2 1/4 cups brown sugar
1 tbsp curry powder
1 tbsp flour

Layer tomato and onion slices with salt in a large bowl. Cover bowl with a towel, let stand overnight.

Drain. Place tomatoes, onion, and chili peppers in a heavy kettle. Add 1 1/2 cups of the vinegar. Heat to boiling, boil 5 minutes. Mix sugar, curry powder, and flour in a bowl. Stir in remaining 1/2 cup vinegar to make a smooth paste. Stir paste into vegetables in a kettle. Cook, stirring often, 1 hour. Spoon into hot, sterilized jars and seal. Especially delicious on top of grilled hamburgers.

Yield: 6 pints.

Mark sent this article to me this afternoon. It's from the Army Times. It's kinda of scary where our country is going. The article, "Brigade homeland tours start Oct. 1", tells of how the 3rd Infantry’s 1st BCT is going to be redeployed here in America. Yes, that's right they are going to be here to "help people at home" and this may be a permanent part of the Army now. This may sound good, but lets look a little closer.

They may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control or to deal with potentially horrific scenarios such as massive poisoning and chaos in response to a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-yield explosive, or CBRNE, attack.

So at the end of Hurricane season, near the election, and after many years of disasters already, the government has decided that they are now there for the average person. I don't think so. If you think that when this happens we are able to fight back - think again. Below is a video from Prison Planet that tells about Concentration Camps for Americans. We should all be afraid.

Now of course people are saying that this cannot happen in America. Maybe, maybe not, but why don't we all unplug from the Television News that only wants to give you the stories that would play on Jerry Springer and do some research. The information that is out there cannot be given to you in a two minute story surrounded by pharmaceutical ads. Family's 2 Pitbulls Kill Infant...

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A family's two pit bulls burst into the house from the backyard to attack a 4-month girl, mauling her to death even as her grandmother tried to escape with the baby into another room, police said.

The grandmother, who was baby-sitting at the time of the attack Friday, was hospitalized Saturday with non-life-threatening injuries. (Rest of story)

I am not sure that I could ever recover from something like this. This is such a tragic story. The history of the Pitbull:

Dog fighting, which could be carried out under clandestine measures, blossomed. Since Bulldogs proved too ponderous and uninterested in dog fighting, the Bulldogs were crossed with English White and Black and Tan Terriers. They were also bred to be intelligent and level-headed during fights and remain non-aggressive toward their handlers. Part of the standard for organized dog-fighting required that the match referee who is unacquainted with the dog be able to enter the ring, pick up a dog while it was engaged in a fight, and get the respective owner to carry it out of the ring without being bitten. Dogs that bit the referee were culled.

As a result, Victorian fighting dogs (Staffordshire Bull Terriers and, though less commonly used as fighters, English Bull Terriers) generally had stable temperaments and were commonly kept in the home by the gambling men who owned them. (wikepedia)

The combination of pit bulls (21), rottweilers (4) and American bulldogs (3) accounted for 80% of all fatal attacks.
51% of the attacks occurred to children (11 years and under) and 49% occurred to adults (21 years and older). Of the adults, 76% occurred to ages 55 and older.
46% of fatal attacks in 2007 involved multiple dogs; 23% involved chained dogs.
71% of the attacks occurred on owner property and 29% off owner property. Of the off-property attacks, 70% (7) were attributed to pit bulls.
60% of the victims were female; 40% of the victims were male. Of the female victims, nearly half (10) were 55 years and older.
The state of Texas had the most fatalities (7). Of these fatalities, 86% (6) were attributed to pit bulls.

Economic Crisis - Are People Paying Attention...

Waking up this morning started the day off not in the best frame of mind. Mikayla was a little off and everything that Mark and I did did not seem to change her mood. So to say the least I was a little off myself. Mark and I were talking about Wall Street and what is happening. Americablog had a letter from a reader of their telling the story of how this couple had started to put money away for their retirment and how they had built built it up over the years and in just a couple of days the market is back to where it was when Bush came into power. And it is still falling.

So after Mark headed off to work, I started to look at the headlines (thise in the main street media as well as elsewhere - you know the place that the MSM doesn't want to go until people demand they report it) and here is what I found:

And then we have McCain, as the market was crumbling, stated that "fundamentals of our economy are strong". Then when the Powrs That Be in his campaign tell him that the market is crashing, he changes his tune.

With lies, foreign policy mistakes, connection to Bush, a running mate that has no concept of the world we live in, and now a lack of understanding the economy - how can people still think this person (campaign) are good for this country? It makes me worry.

Baby Number Two...

I have not mentioned anything about baby number two just yet because, well, nothing has happened. Although we are active, we are just waiting to hear from the adoption agency. This could take anywhere from now or three years. Yes, three years. This is why we started the process this early. We are actually hoping that the baby will come sometime next spring. This way Mark and I are done with school and we will have a better mindset to go into something like two wild kids.

So then why am I writing about the next child when nothing has happened? Well nothing has from the adoption agency, but from Mark it has. First a little history. Mark has a heightened sense when it comes to many things. I still remember very vividly the day we were driving downtown Orlando (when we used to live there) and out of nowhere he said "do you know how they can bring us down. They can fly planes into building just like those". He said this as if he was having a conversation in his head with someone else (he does that often). He was pointing to two or three of the taller buildings in Orlando. I looked at him with surprise. The day was September 8, 2001. I thought nothing of it and then...

Then in July of 2006 after we started the process to adopt for the first time, he told me one morning that he had a dream that we were going to adopt an African-American baby girl. The adoption would happen in either March or April. Then a few weeks later he came down after waking up and told me that he had a dream with our daughter's name in it. Her name, of course, would be Mikayla. Now Mark is not one for thinking of names, but this name sounded right. Now we told everyone, including our agency, about the dream. They were all very shocked when the dream came true. Now think about this as well. The dream happened in July and nine months later we have a little baby girl.

Now a couple of days ago Mark came downstairs and told me that he had a dream of our second child. This child was (if I remember right) going to have a white birth father and and African-American birth mother. He got the feeling that this next child is going to be a little calmer than Miss Mikayla and will be a boy. The difference her is that with Mikayla Mark felt that Mikayla's spirit was talking with him. With our son, he said that it felt like someone else was guiding him in his dream.

So, if we go on the same assumption that Mikayla graced our lives, we should have a new baby boy sometime in May or June. Although Mark feels that the baby had already been conceived and we will be graced sometime in April or May. Lets see what happens. Oh and if it is a boy his name will be Zachary (unless we come up with a different name - but I like it).

Just recently Mikayla has started to do something that Mark and I could not figure out. We have been doing a little potty training (not much she is too young still), but nothing too in depth. We have been asking if she has to pee or has done so. We ask if she has pooped and she usually says yes when she did. She has not gotten the idea that she needs to tell us before she does it, but when she has we take it to the toilet and flush it. This, we hope, will associate the process with the place to do it.

But then one day we were walking through the bathroom (yes we have a walk through bathroom) and she ran to the toilet, lifted the seat, and grabbed her shirt and pulled it towards the water. We thought she was going to pull it into the water, but she only pulled it far enough to go over the rim. Then she closed the seat cover and flushed. You probably already know, but for Mark and I (we are slow in that way) we could not figure out what she was doing. This became an event that happened more than once a day. We figured that it was something that her little mind needed to process and only she knew what it was.

Then one day it hit me - she was copying her Daddy and Papa. She wanted to pee int he toilet like we did so she would walk up to the toilet, open the seat, and pull on her shirt since that was the only thing that she has. She was pretending to pee like us. Once we figured this out (again we are slow), we figured that she was ready to understand that she needs to sit while she used the potty (unless of curse she is trying to be Madonna). So from that point on we are making it a point that when she is around we are showing her what she needs to do when she used the toilet. We now tell her that she needs to sit when she pees and she turns around and tries to sit.

A 5-year-old boy in Serbia took $120,000 out of his father's safe and went on a massive shopping spree with his friends.

They purchased clothes, toys, bikes, candy, computers and games at a local mall.

This Should End The Debate...

A study in Sweden has concluded that the brains of gay men are like that of heterosexual women and lesbians are like that of heterosexual men.

Scientists have noticed for some time that homosexual people of both sexes have differences in certain cognitive abilities, suggesting there may be subtle differences in their brain structure.
This is the first time, however, that scientists have used brain scanners to try to look for the source of those differences.
When these results were collected, it was found that lesbians and heterosexual men shared a particular "asymmetry" in their hemisphere size, while heterosexual women and gay men had no difference between the size of the different halves of their brain.
In other words, structurally, at least, the brains of gay men were more like heterosexual women, and gay women more like heterosexual men.
A further experiment found that in one particular area of the brain, the amygdala, there were other significant differences.

Was listening to music today when this song came on. It's sung by Carrie Underwood in this video, but was originally penned by George Michael in the 90's. Listening to the lyrics sort of saddened me. They ring so true in this world that we live in with the rich only wanting to get richer and the poor trying to figure out how to make it. This truly is not the Christian view of how the world should be. The Christian view is to help everyone. If that is the case, why do the Christians feel that McCain is the person for them? This is a man that cheated on his first wife while she was ill, takes from the lowlife lobbyist to finance his campaign, and pick a person who standing in her own affairs is questionable.

How can these so-called Christians rationalize all the wrong that is out there and the wrong that is still being created and will continue to destroy the U.S. if they choose McCain. How can these people look at Palin and think "this is the person for me. The person that can make the important decisions when needed" - even though she has no clue what the VP does, cannot tell you what the Bush Doctrine is, is being investigated in her home state, and loves killing animals that have no way to escape. Are You Kidding Me? Are we that stupid in America that everything has become a popularity contest (or in Palin's case a beauty contest)? I hope not!

I have been posting more and more stuff concerning politics. Why is that? The reason is my daughter. So many people don't fully understand the concerns that I have with regards to my little angel. The Bush administration doesn't see that Mark and my relationship is truly valid. If the administration had their way we would be locked away (far away) never to be seen again (such as the "terrorist" in Guantanamo). Now we could have the next generation of Bush called McCain-Palin. This scares me more. The reasons are many, but anyone that knows Mark and I and loves Mikayla should think twice before they decide to vote for McCain. One main reason is that fact that McCain thinks that gay adoption should be illigal and that Mark, Mikayla and myself do not represent "family values"!

In an interview with George Stephanapolous in July 2008, Stephanapolous asked John McCain,"What is your position on gay adoption? You told the New York Times you were against it, even in cases where the children couldn't find another home. But then your staff backtracked a bit. What is your position?"
McCain responded, "My position is, it's not the reason why I'm running for president of the United States. And I think that two parent families are best for America."
Stephanapolous asked, "Well, what do you mean by that, it's not the reason you're running for President of the United States?"
McCain replied, "Because I think -- well, I think that it's -- it is important for us to emphasize family values. But I think it's very important that we understand that we have other challenges, too. I'm running for president of the United States, because I want to help with family values. And I think that family values are important, when we have two parent -- families that are of parents that are the traditional family."
Stephanapolous: "But there are several hundred thousand children in the country who don't have a home. And if a gay couple wants to adopt them, what's wrong with that?"
McCain: "I am for the values that two parent families, the traditional family represents."
Stephanapolous: "So, you're against gay adoption."
McCain: "I am for the values and principles that two parent families represent. And I also do point out that many of these decisions are made by the states, as we all know. And I will do everything I can to encourage adoption, to encourage all of the things that keeps families together, including educational opportunities, including a better economy, job creation. And I'm running for president, because I want to help families in America. And one of my positions is that I believe that family values and family traditions are preserved."

More and More I Become...

For the past two years I have been getting my Bachelors of Science in Humane Leadership. This is a degree that the Humane Society of the United States put together with Duquense University. They have also created a Masters Degree in Community Leadership, which I may continue with. While doing research for some of my classes, I have delved into places that I never knew existed. With the help from Mark (he is on a new diet) and this degree, I am moving more and more towards a vegetarian.

When did this realization hit me? Well first I mad point of trying not to eat meat when I did not know where it came from. Luckily we have many farms around this area that raise their animals humanely and never abuse them (as with most slaughter houses). So I felt fine eating meat on occasion. Then one morning (about three days ago) I was making scrambled eggs from my daughter and then the light went on - this is an embryo (or one day could have been). Then I asked myself would I eat a human embryo? The thought sounded gross and made my stomach turn a little.

Tonight I made tacos and as I was cooking the meat I again started to think - I am cooking the decaying flesh of a cow. Yes I said decaying because once things die they start to decay. Then the smell hit me and again my stomach turned a little. I then added the taco spices and the smell went away, but the thought was still there. I did eat it but not with the same enjoyment that I used to have.

Then more realizations hit me. This was a sentient creature (Sentience is the ability to feel or perceive subjectively.) (wikipedia) At one time this piece of meat that I am eating could feel. What right do I have to take part in the death of this animal? I then started to associate all the meats that I used to eat and (finally) connect them to the animal. It may sound stupid but I would not make the connection in my mind's eye that the ham for Chirstmas was once a pig. That the hamburger, the steak, the roast, was once a cow.

This was very disturbing to me. It was disturbing that I could so easily disconnect from reality and think that what I was eating did not have any affect on the other creature in this world. That there are so many people out there that probably have the same disconnect. If they watched the video Meet Your Meat and not feel completely disgusted and have the light go on for them as well I would be surprised.

A vegitarian. This is more and more what I become.

The little one is off and running with her speech. She is quickly learning the alphabet (not verbatim) but she does know A, B, D, F, H, I, J, M, O, P (and tell you what P sounds like), S, T, Z (but she thinks Z is YEEEEEAHHH!). If asked, she can point out almost each letter. I started to recite the alphabet and stopped at L and she followed up with M - without me helping her.

She now knows the difference (somewhat) between Yes and No and she says both very clearly. Colors are coming. We have a book, "Little Bear Counts His Favorite Things", where under number 8 are a set of crayons each a different color. She can point to the color you ask. She has only been able to do it with this book. She hasn't been able to point out all the colors outside this book. We are working on that though. While down at grandma, she had some crayons and she grabbed the color we asked for.

So the confusion that I have when teaching Mikayla new words and associating those words with the actual objects is interesting. The reason is what do we teach her. Is a cup a cup or glass or plastic or blue or round or clear. There are some many ways to describe something and I have noticed that Mark and I have told her a different description for the same object. Is this confusing her or is it helping to build her understanding of the world around her?

In the video below, Mikayla is outside playing with some sidewalk chalk that Grampa got for her when we went back to visit. While we were on vacation she learned how to do surprise, drama and blow a kiss. The drama is the best.

Like some people, I have tried to get as much information as I possibly could when it comes to both of the candidates. The reason I say some is because most people are going with how the candidates make them feel. Most people make some sort of connection with the person. Most people say they vote for a person because they feel they can sit down and have a beer with them.

What I don't understand is why people who slam Obama for not knowing what he stands for or feels that he hasn't done anything that makes him qualified to be president, are rallying around Palin. Then I saw the wonderful insight of the Sherri Shephed. You remember her. The one that couldn't answer if the world was round or flat. Well now she has decided to give her insight as to why Palin would make a great president. Sherri and her stupidity again:

"Barbara, please do not discount Palin as a mother. This woman's got four, now five kids. you tell me what mother cannot run the country after having five kids. She either comes in and she does it politcally or she takes it by force. Do not, I mean and I know that everbody says she lacks experience but as a mother I'm going the woman was in charge of the PTA. You can't even get chairs when you're in charge of the PTA. Come on. I'm so excited about this race now."

What really scares me is that when she said this the crowd started to clap and chear. WHAT? So people think that since she ran the PTA and has five kids she can take on countries that hate us? Oh, but I should not forget that Sherri puts us all at ease because she knows that McCain will not die in his first term. So how does she know this? She is talking to god?

The wonderful insight of Sherri starts at 1:16. The other bad part of this is that not one of the other hosts said anything to her. They let her spew her infalible insight.

I love Matt Damon. Ever since I saw him in "Good Will Hunting" I was totally infatuated with him. Now he is speaking out on Gov. Palin and why more people should be concerned with her as the possible Leader of the Free World. He sums it all up in one sentence:

"The hockey mom, you know, 'oh, I'm just a hockey mom'... and she's facing down President Putin... It's totally absurd... it's a really terrifying possibility."

Phoebe At Shelter...

Here are some pictures of Phoebe after we cleaned her up at the shelter. She came to us as a stray. One morning when I came into work, she was outside in the pen playing and I noticed that she had what looked like dirt around her eye. I asked one of the volunteers to wash her when she came in. The volunteer came to me with some concerns. She told me that it wasn't mud that was around her eye but blood. Luckily we had a vet who was supposed to show up that day and she could take a look at Phoebe for us.

The vet said that under Phoebe's fur there were what looked like burns. She wanted to take Phoebe to her office and have her shaved down and have the burns cleaned. Later when we got a call from the vet they told us that it looked like some form of chemical burns. The way the injuries were on Phoebe looked like someone had poured something on her head (notice in the side pictures how the injuries looked and imagine some form of liquid dripping down her neck).

I told Mark about this poor little puppy and one night as we were driving home he said he wanted to go an meet her. At that point I knew that she would be a part of our lives. Below are the pictures. These were taken only a few days after the vet shaved her down. We needed to give her a bath daily and scrub (yes scrub) the burned areas to remove any dead skin. Amazingly she was wonderful.

They Really Do Understand The Average American...

On Tuesday night Cindy McCain and Laura Bush asked that the people attending the RNC not be Republicans during the Gustav crisis. They needed to be Americans and to dig deep into their pocket books and help. But how do you think the average American feels when Cindy McCain shows up on stage in an outfit that cost anywhere between $299,100 and $313,100. The earrings cost $100,000 + more than the house I am living in. How special. The pearl necklace alone could pay for some people to eat for a year. So yes the Republicans really do understand the plight of the middle class and what we are going through. Even if they realloy did, why rub it in the face of the Hurrican victoms. The ones that they want (or so they say) to help.

How can people like this really understand that most American are living from pay check to pay check - if they are getting a paycheck. Most Americans are trying to decide if they should pay for the medicine that they really need or buy groceries. Most Americans are trying to figure out a way to pay for the high cost of oil for the winter. And the solutions that most Rupulicans tell them - get another job becuase its not our problem. So the new standard in America is for people to be working three or more jobs or they are not holding up their end of the bargin.

We cannot do this for four more years. We cannot lose all that America stands for. We cannot let these rich, out of touch, fat cats ruin our country (although GWB has already done that). We cannot let these people take away the future of our children and their children. It will already take way to many years to repair what GWB has done in just eight. Don't be afraid to talk about the issues, but know the issues and where each canidate stands. Don't become a talking head for the out of touch MSM. Do your own research and inform people. Know your stuff and let the other people prove you wrong.

Just wanted to post this because it shows the media getting some backbone and balls. Although the McCain spokesman never really answered the questions on Palin (he tried to avoid the question and show how inexperienced Obama is), he did get his GOP ass wiped up. Too bad the interview could not have gone on longer. I don't think CNN would have let up and the McCAin spokesman probably would have walked off. She's Hot, Thank God The Issues Don't Matter...

Thank god for us, the issues don't really matter. The republican party has "the Hottest VP" ever. This is what matters or so it seems to the GOP. Who cares that she wanted to ban books, that she wants to take the rights away from women and their bodies, that she touts abstinence and does not want sex education taught, but her daughter is learning from her baby's daddy. Someone that has no idea what the VP does. Someone whose only international experience is traveling to another country on vacation. But why should we worry? Why, because the GOP seems to be able to get away with anything.

Even when two top Republican pundits, Peggy Noonan and Mike Murphy, talk about how this choice is "bullshit" (watch below), all will be forgotten of the things that Palin has not done when it come time vote. People will vote for McCain because they connect with Palin. They understand her and where she is coming from. No one cares that she could be the next president. No one cares because she is HOT. Gotta love the Republicans. They can take the office of the VP and sexualize it. This should piss many off, but will it? No!

Sarah Palin Wanted To Ban Books...

This is just scary and the Christian Right sees nothing wrong with this. From Crooks and Liars:

[Former mayor] John Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. “She asked the library how she could go about banning books,” he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. “The librarian was aghast.” That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn’t be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving “full support” to the mayor.

This comes from a TIME article filed from Wasilla, where journalists are busy doing the vetting that McCain left to a secretive ultra-right group, the Council for National Policy.

Think that this could not happen in 2008 - your wrong. From September 27 until October 4 is Banned Book Week. Still across this country of ours, people who think they have an "in" with their almighty god feel that can tell me what I and my children can and cannot read. How dare these people assume that they know what everyone should read!

Each year, the American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom receives hundreds of reports on books and other materials that were "challenged" (their removal from school or library shelves was requested). The ALA estimates the number represents only about a quarter of the actual challenges. "Most Challenged" titles include the popular "Harry Potter" series of fantasy books for children by J.K. Rowling. The series drew complaints from parents and others who believe the books promote witchcraft to children.

Here is a list of the books that have been banned (or requested to be banned) and the reasons:

"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain, for its use of language, particularly references to race
"It's Perfectly Normal", a sex education book by Robie Harris, for being too explicit, especially for children
"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou, for the description of rape she suffered as a child.

Are they afraid that since homosexuality happens in nature that means that it is not a choice. Cannot have that. Our kids will be scared for life. They grow up so fast...and it is driving me crazy. Mikayla is now imitating almost everything we do. She needs to take a piece of toilet paper and wipe her nose because Mark does this all the time. She wants to flush the toilet, while we are going mind you. She will usually sing with any song that is being played - although her singing is more like a scream, she can hold a note for a surprisingly long time.

But the worst thing that she is doing is coping us when we plug things in. Mark made her a nice necklace with keys hanging from it. She was carrying that around for a while and then she disappeared on me. I ran after her and found her in the kitchen with her key necklace trying to plug a key into the power outlet. Thank god we had it covered. The problem is that she knows how to unplug things as well. She has unplugged the vacuum while I was using it. So now we have to be much more aware of what she is doing and what we are doing.

Land of the Free?...

I would like to bring up the some questions and concerns of my own. The First Amendment gives all Americans the right to assemble, protest, and petition, but why does this fall under fire when it comes to protesting politicians?

At the DNC, about 100 people were arrested when a crowd of about 300 people disrupted traffic near the Denver City and County Building (read article here). Now I understand that our right to protest is supposed to be granted when we do it in a peaceful way. This group decided not to be peaceful. The arrests I feel were warranted.

Now we come to the RNC convention this week. Again there were arrest, but I am lost as to why the arrests were made. When you read the article you find out that the police raided homes of these people that were planning to protest. They were planning and they get arrested. Why is this OK? I was also speechless to find out that "25-30 officers in riot gear, with semi-automatic weapons drawn, entering homes of those suspected of planning protests, handcuffing and forcing them to lay on the floor, while law enforcement officers searched the homes, seizing computers, journals, and political pamphlets." When did our freedoms get tossed out and this police state start to take over?

It has also been reported, as mentioned above, that the federal government was involved with this raid. From the article: "As the police attacks on protesters in Minnesota continue...it appears increasingly clear that it is the Federal Government that is directing this intimidation campaign. Minnesota Public Radio reported yesterday that "the searches were led by the Ramsey County Sheriff's office. Deputies coordinated searches with the Minneapolis and St. Paul police departments and the Federal Bureau of Investigation."

What laws allow the police and the FBI to raid a home, seize computers and pamphlets and make this type of arrest when the people are only planning to protest? Also, is it extreme that they went in with full riot gear? Also, why isn't this a bigger story on the news? People are losing their rights and the news gives it a no more than a little coverage.

I truly believe in our constitution and what it has done for us, but I also believe that we as a society need to follow the constitution and allow the freedoms that it affords us.

This last week we went back to Michigan to see my family and give my parents time to spend with their granddaughter. We decided to head back through Canada since it cuts off more than three hours from the trip. We have done this many times, but this time things changed a little on our departure.

As we drove up to the border, we were stopped by two border patrol officers. One was talking to the person in the van in front of us and the other came to our window. This was different since most border patrol officers are in their little cubical at the gates. This time they were both standing outside waiting for cars coming to them. The officer asked to see our passports. He asked us the usual questions - why are you traveling to Canada, are you planning on stopping anywhere in Canada, any guns or alcohol in the your possession? This was all normal.

While this was happening the officer that was dealing with the car in front of us had the person get out of his vehicle. She asked him to open the back of the van so she could look in. The thing I noticed was that the gentlemen was of middle eastern decent. The officer that was dealing with us didn't go any further than asking us the normal questions and smiling the whole time. Then another van drove by us on the right hand side. This car was not stopped. The officer told the women, who started to run after the van that it was so and so. She smiled and nodded at our officer and continued with her driver.

We were handed our information back to us and were waved on. We put all our information away thinking that we were on our way to Canada. Now this all seems normal until we got to another gate where we had to give our passports over again. Come to find out the first stop that we had to make was actually the U.S. border patrol. The Vermont boarder patrol had officers asking people why they are leaving the U.S. Do we now have to get permission to travel outside America? Why were they so much more interested in the man in front of us than they were us? I think that they were doing some racial profiling. Why didn't they look in our van? And why are they concerned with who is leaving the country?

I told Mark the next time we leave and they stop us, we should tell them we are defecting. I just want to see what reaction it would get and how long we would have to be in jail.

Hoarding Case...

Two have been charged in animal cruelty. As I read the article, disgust, anger, and sadness filled my vains. Only people that are mentally unstable could possible think that what they are doing is right. According to the article, "The Harpins...didn’t know why their animals were dying. They were very angry (that animal control) were taking the animals away from them, and they didn’t offer any information. They simply said ‘We’re taking care of them, but they’re dying, there’s nothing we can do.’"

"Ferrets, rabbits, cats, three lizards, a tarantula, a boa constrictor, a chinchilla and a starving dog were among the animals in the home on Route 5 in Passumpsic. Also found was a decomposing animal of unknown type in a pot on a stove, and more than a dozen partially frozen dead animals in a refrigerator freezer.

I hate it when I hear about cases like this. According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), animal hoarding is one of the greatest causes of animal suffering in the United States, resulting in more injuries, suffering, and deaths to animals than intentional acts of cruelty perpetrated by animal abusers. What is animal hoarding? The definition that follows is from Tufts.edu:

The following criteria are used to define animal hoarding:

More than the typical number of companion animals
Inability to provide even minimal standards of nutrition, sanitation, shelter, and veterinary care, with this neglect often resulting in starvation, illness, and death
Denial of the inability to provide this minimum care and the impact of that failure on the animals, the household, and human occupants of the dwelling

Many people truly believe that what they are doing is better than what anyone else could do. Even if their animals are dying. I have had people tell me that they they could not possibly take the animals into the humane society because they knew that they would kill them. One lady told me this as I walked through more than a couple of inches of cat feces, spiderwebs, and fleas jumping on and off me. The lady that lived in this house was in her 80's, had no family and the department of the government that deals with the elderly told me that WE were not doing enough for her.

How can we as a society neglet people like this? How can government officials sit in their offices knowing that this poor women was denied travel on the local bus to get her groceries because other people on the bus were getting flea bites? The official that I was dealing with told me that she wasn't that bad off. Her oven we cakes in black something and the top of the stove was covered in cat feces. She had more than 20 cats living inside and out. When I met with her one day she was crying. When I asked her why, she told me that her favorite two cats had died and she had to throw them in the dumpster behind her house. This is OK?!

Observation of the Human Condition...

This morning was a busy day for Mikayla and myself. We had to take our car in to have the front end fixed (again). When you go over 65 the steering wheel shakes wildly. While we were waiting (for more than two hours), I was watching the people that come and go in the dealership. One thing that made me smile (out of pity mainly) was watching a young mechanic leave on his break. The whole garage takes a break at 10 and they all file out.

While this one mechanic who could not be any older than 20-21 got into his car (which was louder than a jet engine - not in a good way either) and drove off the dealership lot. As I was bored, I started to think where he could go in such a short amount of time. Then while I watched him I found out. He drove across the street to the Mobile station. Not to get gas. He parked. Got out of his car and went inside to get a sandwich.

I find it interesting and a little sad that this person needed to get in his car to cross the street. The best part of this is that another mechanic did walk across the street and made it there and back before the young guy could get through the traffic. I know that many people could care less about this, but why are we so dependent on these things?

Back on April 3, I wrote about Mikayla's vagina. No, not in depth. I wrote about how people (friends and family) were calling the vagina many different names. Well searching the internet for something exciting to watch or read, I came across a group of fathers and their website called "Dadlabs - Taking Back Paternity". These guys are very funny and the site is often interesting. They do little videos concerning many problems that come up when dealing with our children. One of the videos is dealing with one father's daughter and what they were going to call her vagina. Not in the naming way that men call their penis, but in the is it going to be a vagina, who-who, or my new favorite - vagine.

I am a bad uncle. Taylor had written this entry a while ago and with all the crap that has been happening (see below) I never got it on. Taylor is one very talented kid (she really is not a kid anymore, but hey). As you will see below, she is an artist and a damn good one at that. My family was out here in April and I remember Taylor working on this DVD cover when they were here. She finished it and when I got it, it took my breath away. This from a 16 year old (almost). Hi, sorry I haven't had anything posted in a awhile...

Well, I got back from camp about a week ago (Camp Midicha for kids with diabetes). This was my last year to go as a camper, but next year I can be a C.I.T., or a counselor-in-training. This Wednesday, I'm going to be leaving (again) to go to Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for the second year for art. I'll be gone for 12 days. Hopefully I get to make some cool art projects to show you all.

Speaking of which, I made a Rent poster (well, actually the DVD cover, to be exact), but I changed the characters to the ones from Fullmetal Alchemist. If you try looking it up but can't find the characters being Maureen and Joanne, don't worry, those two are my own character, Kita (the one with the teal bangs), and my best friend's character, Jenika.

I guess that's all the updating for now...

Dance...

Well not only is she talking. She is singing. She still loves to sing and will do so with a smile on her face when she is asked. Along with singing, she is a little dancer. Whenever she hears music she breaks out in dance. She does this even in her highchair. We try to have music on all the time, so when she hears a song she likes her feet take over (or her knees).

One day I had the music low and I could barley hear it, but when Janet's "Feedback" came on she stopped what she was doing, paused a second and then started to bop her head with the beat.

I have to admit that these are from July. I wanted to get them up, but school got in the way. In the videos she says "out", "hi", "car" and "house". OK, the word house only Mark and I can understand, but that was in July. Here are the videos.

As I said, these were taken in July. She has advanced since then, but I have no video yet. She now says, "hi", hi-ya", "car", "house (clearer)", "out", "please", and she knows some letter and can say them. She knows and says "m", "s", "b", "d", "f", and she can point out "a, c, o, q, z, x, y". She is growing up too fast.

I am back. Its been a while, but I have a good excuse - sorta. If you notice, the last time I posted anything was on June 20. The reason for this was school. Yes, during our wonderful summer months I have been working my ass off with school. Mark told me that he has never seen me spend so much time doing school - and it was pissing him off. Summer is supposed to be the time where we can get out of the house, work on the yard, grow a wonderful garden, but not this summer. This summer I had to take Accounting!

This class kicked my ass and then some. I was putting in more than 15 hours a week for this class alone. I also had a Sociology class that was driving me crazy. That along with taking care of Mikayla, trying to find time for Mark to work in his garden and time for me to breath. It blew. But with the click of a key stroke I am done with this horrid class. I now have a week and a half off to breath (somewhat). The reason I say somewhat is because next week starts "preweek" for my next classes and I will have work that will need to be done. The upside. Yes there is an upside. We will be in Michigan visiting my family. Grandma will be able to spend her days taking care of our little angel.

So why was this class so hard? The reason is that I had a professor that was absent for the first five plus weeks. With accounting, everything you are learning builds on what you had learned. My wonderful professor would post questions that we had to answer on a weekly basis and that would be it. He never commented on anything that anyone had said. Students were answering others questions concerning the homework. The professor had just disappeared. Hers is the best part. Weeks one through five we not corrected and given back to us until we were halfway through week six. So I was trying to do work with the hope that I got the first five weeks correct.

Emails to the professor came back with how busy he was. How far behind he was and that he was trying to get all the papers corrected. Sorry, if you cannot handle the work load - don't do the work. He would tell us all that such and such would be back to us by X date. Nothing. I mean come on. I had a deadline that I had to make concerning my post and homework. Since he is teaching, he should be right on top of things.

Well, the whole class received an email from someone at the collage telling us that many students had concerns about this professor. The email went on to tellus that they were also trying to get in touch with him and that we should hold on tight. Yes I was one that ratted on him. Then a couple of days later, there he is, but still no homework. He is still behind and we are finishing week six. This is a twelve week course. By the end of week six all of my homework is finally graded and amazingly I did well. All A's on the homework and B's on the posts (I didn't care about those as much since the professor didn't seem to either).

Now with a smile on my face - I AM DONE!!!

So on with all the important things that have been happening.

Gender Roles...

One of the classes that I have this term is Sociology. This past week we were discussing the roles of gender in our society. Why is it that boys and girls are set into certain "gender roles" within 24 hours of their birth? It used to be that some hospitals would bring the baby to their mother and father wrapped in blue for boys and pink for girls. Why? Many researchers are coming to the conclusion that a lot of boys are “emotionally mideducated”. Emotionally miseducated means that “our culture emotionally cripples boys--a set of unique stresses is continuing to propel today's young males down a troubled path.” The article that we had to read was from James Henslin, who mentions that “parents gently and sometimes not so gently push (their child) onto a predetermined course”. This course seems to be becoming more destructive to the male gender as our society feeds us “images (of men that are) hyper-masculine--emotionless killing machines…Many boys learn to hide behind a ‘mask of bravado’”. Since we have a society that sees us (men) as the dominate of the species, we tend to be the ones that find ourselves in more trouble. Some feel that this can be attributed to the father figure since “fathers have been found to reinforce gender stereotypes more often than mothers”.

So if males are more predestined to head down that path, where does that put women when we dress them in cute frilly little dresses, tell them that they cannot do something because it's not "lady like", and hold them back from being the little person that they should be. People tend to ask Mark and I how old our son is. I even had Mikayla in blue jeans with flowers on them and a peach and pink top with flowers (not too gaudy) and I had people say (two at least) "hey little buddy" or "how is the little buddy today". But my point is that no matter what we do to our children with regard to their clothing, toys, or outside activities, we need to let our children grow up in a society that allows them to be who they are and not to hold them back. I want to give my daughter the a hammer so she has the capability of smashing the "glass" ceiling.

Now that I have a daughter, I want to change the way people think about her. Mark and I want our daughter to be able to grow up in a world where her gender does not come into play. She can do or be whoever she wants to be. The clothing that we have bought for her stays mainly on the “gender neutral” side and I toss her around and let her play in the dirt as I would any child. Now the problem that we are facing is my mother wants to see her in dresses so that she will be "pretty". She is always asking us why we do not “allow” her top wear dresses. It is not that we don't allow her to wear dresses; we just don't see dresses in her personality. She is a child that wants to play, get dirty, run, jump in the water, and however else she wants to play is fine by us. You see I see my daughter as one of the strongest personalities that I have ever meet and I will never extinguish that by telling her that she cannot do something or be something because of her gender.

When Cats Attack and Kids Laugh...

When trying to figure out the best way to wear down a child that has more energy than both parents, use the animals. They have almost as much energy as the child and both child and animal has fun. Mikayla found something that made Milo happy since he was able to chase this around the house. Mikayla likes to be chased and having either the dogs (Phoebe is Mikayla favorite chase buddy) or Milo takes the pressure off the older folks (i.e. us parents).

Now before anyone gets excited about seeing another dog in the video, no we have not gotten another dog (even though the thought is there). This is our neighbors dog, Sammy, who we were watching for the weekend. It seems that all the animals that Mikayla meets seems to like kids. This is very important to us since we want her to enjoy all species. We are teaching her the importance of being careful and not all animals are the same as hers at home. She doesn't quite get ti yet, but we are setting the foundation.

Marriage In California...

On the first day of legalized marriage in California, many couples were rushing to get married. What is different about this day? The difference is finally that the courts in California actually see gays and lesbians as equals - not something that should be swept under the carpet. One stroy in this clip is of a couple that has been together for 18 years and has three daughters. Eighteen years. This is longer than some straight couples, but there are people out there that want to change the freedom that we finally have.

In November gay marriage will be on the ballots. The upside to this is that the majority of Californians approve gay marriage and with a number of Democrats making their way to the polls this election season, equality should remain.

Dress Up...

We have now moved on to the next fun stage (which grandma is going to enjoy). It is now "dress up" time. Mikayla walks to the rooms where she knows her cloths are and points to them. We grab one and she helps up put it on. Once that one is on she points again to have us get something else. And so on. We have not done this with all her cloths, but that will be coming soon.

This picture (you can't see them all) has her pajamas, her pants, a red sleeveless jacket, a green hooded coat, a flowery rain jacket and her winter hat. She was on her way to get her sandals on as well. She dresses up like this and walks through the house carrying anything she can. Mark gave her a canvass shopping bag that she carried with her for a while. This is going to be a fun stage and just seeing her smile makes my heart melt.

Olbermann, McCain, You Should Know Better...

Olbermann has some words for our veteran friend John McCain:

The Government Accountability Office just released a study Tuesday that concludes that one out of every ten soldiers sent to Iraq, takes with them medical problems "severe enough to significantly limit their ability to fight."
In five years, we have now sent 43-thousand of them to war even though, they were already wounded.
And when they come home, is not that important.

The Iraqi politicians say the treaty demands Iraq’s consent to the establishment of nearly double the number of U.S. military bases in Iraq, from about 30, to 58, and from temporary, to permanent.
Those will be American men and women who must, of necessity, staff these bases - staff them, in Mr. McCain’s MCEscher dream world in which our people can all come home while they stay there for a hundred years but they’ll be back by 2013.
And when they come home, is not that important.

And when we think about McCain's words, "That's not too important", we must remember that every day kids (men and women) are dying. And when McCain tells us that it not important, does he remember the feeling when he was let down by our government when he was a POW? We must remember that all the kids fighting over there are IMPORTANT even if McCain doesn't think so.

They are ten Americans, who have died in Iraq since the first of this month. There are four more. The Defense Department has not yet identified the others.
And while you, Senator, may ask for all the context you can get, those ten men... will never know any of it.
Because the true context here, is that if you could ask those American war heroes, or the family and the friends that loved them, if they have a better estimate of when American forces can come home from Iraq…
They could rightly say, "No. But that’s… not… too… important."

Why Gays Should Not Marry...

1) Homosexuality is not natural, much like eyeglasses, polyester, and birth control.

2) Heterosexual marriages are valid because they produce children. Infertile couples and old people can't legally get married because the world needs more children.

3) Obviously, gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

4) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if Gay marriage is allowed, since Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage was meaningful.

5) Heterosexual marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are property, blacks can't marry whites, and divorce is illegal.

6) Gay marriage should be decided by people, not the courts, because the majority-elected legislatures, not courts, have historically protected the rights of the minorities.

7) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

8) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

9) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

10) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why single parents are forbidden to raise children.

11) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and we could never adapt to new social norms because we haven't adapted to things like cars or longer life-spans.

12) Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a "separate but equal" institution is always constitutional. Separate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as separate marriages for gays and lesbians will.

America, Not So Equal...

Now don't get me wrong, I love America but what some people consider "equal" just infuriates me is the fact that out of 50 states Mark and I can only be "equal" in two - Massachusetts and California (which may be overturned in November). Now Norway has allowed gays to marry. There are more countries than states where Mark and I would have the same rights as everyone else. The countries are:

The Netherlands, 2001.
Belgium, 2003.
Massachusetts, USA, 2004.
Canada, 2005.
Spain, 2005.
Norway, 2008

OSLO (AFP) — Norway's parliament on Wednesday adopted a new marriage law that allows homosexuals to marry and adopt children and permits lesbians to be artificially inseminated.
After a heated debate, the members of parliament adopted the text by a vote of 84 to 41.
The three centre-left coalition parties in power and two opposition parties, the Conservatives and the Liberals, voted largely in favour of the law, while the Christian Democrats and the far-right Progress Party voted against it.
Norway thus became the sixth country in the world to grant homosexuals the right to marry on an equal footing with heterosexuals, according to Norwegian television TV2.
"This decision is of an importance comparable to universal suffrage and our law on parity," Labour Party rapporteur Gunn Karin Gjul said during the debate.
The most controversial part of the law is that which gives lesbians the right to be artificially inseminated. The sperm donor must be identified so that the child can seek out his or her biological father at the age of 18.
"We are now creating a system where the father is reduced to a sperm sample," lamented Ulf Erik Knudsen, a member of the far-right.
Outside the parliament, a handful of opponents protested with posters reading "Have fathers become superfluous?" and "Parliament has no mandate to change the laws of nature."
Among other things, the new legislation replaces a so-called "partnership law" adopted in 1993 which gave Norwegian homosexuals the right to civil unions.
Health care workers who do not want to perform artificial inseminations on lesbians because of their personal convictions will not be under any obligation to carry out the procedure.
The new law is expected to enter into force at the end of this year or early next year.
Homosexuality was illegal until 1972 in Norway, a country which has since become one of the most liberal in the world in the field.

Weird Animals...

While doing research, I once again came across some interesting things on the internet. Although everything you type into any search engine brings back some sort of porn sight, that is not what I found. I found a place that listed 25 of the most weird and wonderful animals. Some of them are very interesting looking and look as if they are out of a science fiction movie. While some seem to be part of a little girls stuffed animal collection - like:

Angora Rabbit

The Angora rabbit is a variety of domestic rabbit bred for its long, soft hair. The Angora is one of the oldest types of domestic rabbit, originating in Ankara, Turkey, along with the Angora cat and Angora goat. The rabbits were popular pets with French royalty in the mid 1700s, and spread to other parts of Europe by the end of the century. They first appeared in the United States in the early 1900s. They are bred largely for their long wool, which may be removed by shearing or plucking (gently pulling loose wool).

There are many individual breeds of Angora rabbits, four of which are ARBA recognized. Such breeds include, French, German, Giant, English, Satin, Chinese, Swiss, Finnish, to name a few.

Red Panda

The Red Panda, Ailurus fulgens ("shining cat," from a Latinized form of the Greek, ailouros, "cat," and the participial form of the Latin fulgere, "to shine") is a mostly herbivorous mammal, slightly larger than a domestic cat (55 cm long). The Red Panda has semi-retractile claws and, like the Giant Panda, has a "false thumb" which is really an extension of the wrist bone. Thick fur on the soles of the feet offers protection from cold and hides scent glands. The Red Panda is native to the Himalayas in Nepal and southern China. The word panda is derived from Nepalese word "ponya" which means bamboo and plants eating animals in Nepal.

Aye-aye

The Aye-aye

(Daubentonia madagascariensis) is a strepsirrhine native to Madagascar that combines rodent-like teeth with a long, thin middle finger to fill the same ecological niche as a woodpecker. It is the world's largest nocturnal primate, and is characterized by its unique method of finding food; it taps on trees to find grubs, then gnaws

holes in the wood and inserts its elongated middle finger to pull the grubs out.

Daubentonia is the only genus in the family Daubentoniidae and infraorder Chiromyiformes. The Aye-aye is the only extant member of the genus (although it is currently an endangered species); a second species (Daubentonia robusta) was exterminated over the last few centuries.

Leafy Seadragon

Named after the dragons of Chinese mythology, Leafy seadragons (Phycodurus eques) resemble a piece of drifting seaweed as they float in the seaweed-filled water. The Leafy seadragon, with green, orange and gold hues along its body, is covered with leaf-like appendages, making it remarkably camouflaged. Only the fluttering of tiny fins or the moving of an independently swiveling eye, reveals its presence.

Like the seahorse, the male seadragon carries as many as 150-200 eggs. After being deposited by the female, the eggs are carried in the honeycomb-shaped area (known as the brood patch) under the male's tail for approximately eight weeks. Seadragons have no teeth or stomach and feed exclusively on mysidopsis shrimp. Known as "Australian seahorses" in Australia, they are

found in calm, cold water that is approximately 50-54° F (10-12° C). Leafy seadragons have been protected by the South Australian government since 1982.

Blobfish

The blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus) is a fish that inhabits the deep waters off the coasts of Australia and Tasmania. Due to the inaccessibility of its habitat, it is rarely seen by humans.

Blobfish are found at depths where the pressure is several dozens of times higher than at sea level, which would likely make gas bladders inefficient. To remain buoyant, the flesh of the blobfish is primarily a gelatinous mass with a density slightly less than water; this allows the fish to float above the sea floor without expending energy on swimming. The relative lack of muscle is not a disadvantage as it primarily swallows edible matter that floats by in front it.

Stop EBay From Selling Ivory...

Poachers, who kill elephants for their ivory tusks, have brought the animal to the brink of extinction. An international ban on ivory has diminished the illicit ivory trade and reduced the killing. Over 120 countries support the ban. So why is EBay still allowing people to sell ivory on their site?

An animal welfare group charges that eBay sales of ivory are brisker than ever a year after the online marketplace promised to restrict the sale of products made from animal teeth and tusks—many of which come from endangered species. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), based in Washington, D.C., is urging eBay to ban—not simply restrict—all such sales on its Web market.

How Class Works...

While doing research on my sociology assignment, I came across an article that the New York Times did in 2005. The article (interactive test) is “How Class Works”. This is an interactive test that you can take to see what your position is in our society. They use the four common criteria for gauging class: Occupation, Education, Income, and Wealth. There are roll over menus that you chose from and it tells you how important you are.

They also put other section on there so you can see how Class Breaks Down, Income Mobility, and the Nationwide Poll. It is a very interesting to see that what made class three years ago. In the income area they have $60,000 as upper middle class. I think that has changed over the last couple of years. Here are the stats for 2006:

$60,000 - $97,032 - Upper middle income

$37,774 - $60,000 - Middle income

$20,035 - $37,774 - Lower middle income

So when you see today’s news that unemployment has reached a new low (5.5% and 49,000 jobs lost), prices going up and people staying at the same rate of pay, I think upper middle class has become lower middle class.

Obama finally made it as the presumptive Nominee of the Democratic Party. Now he can finally start getting things rolling to fight against the RNC. Now that Hillary has dropped out, I feel positive now that we have a chance of taking this country back (unless Bush decided to toss something into the mix as attacking Iran!)

While trying to find land, this polar bear had swam more than 200 miles. The Icelandic Police felt that it posed a threat to humans so they shot it dead and then proudly sat behind it to take a picture. The environment minister gave the OK to shot the polar bear because he said that "the correct tranquiliser would have taken 24 hours to be flown in". This was disputed by the cheif vet in town when he claimed that "he had the drugs necessary to immobilize the bear in the boot of his car".

The sad part of this is that this is an endangered animal that has not been seen in Iceland in 15 years. Thanks to global warming, the polar bear had no ice to land on while making the trip. It's sad that people take so much pride (as taking a picture with the dead bear) in killing.

Update: Youtube has taken the video of the killing off their sight. It should be there so people can see how horrific this senseless killing is and maybe we can stop it. The U.S. Geological Survey states that two thirds of the polar bears will be gone by 2050 (that is more than 16,000 animals).

SNL took the NBA "There Can Only Be One" ads and added a twist. They did it for Obama and Clinton. The funny part is they are still tearing Clinton apart. Even SNL knows when enough should be enough.
